I recently went to a repro endo for the first time for help with PCOS and Hypothyroidism. I talked to the nurse today and she said that all of my labs were normal including the glucose test and that therefore I did not need to go on Metformin. My dr is currently out of the country and another dr read the results. My OB/GYN put me on Metformin in December 03 even though the lab work then also showed that I was not insulin resistant because she said that all women with PCOS are insulin resistant to some degree even if it does not show up and that it would help prevent diabetes, hopefully help with my weight and should make my periods normal. I've been on the pill since '98 and that's the only way I have a period. I was on the metformin for two months and then went off the pill to see if my cycles were back. A couple weeks later I found out I was pregnant. I stayed on the metformin through the first trimester to reduce the m/c rate and then went off and have not gone back on it because I was breastfeeding.
My question is this: Are any of you on Metformin even though the lab work does not show you are insulin resistant and if so what is the reason for you being on it?
I'm on Metformin, and I don't even know if I'm insulin resistant. My doc never ordered the test, but it was her suggestion that I go on it. I got really lucky that I have such a willing doctor. She'll do anything to get me pg. I would definitely try a second opinion or wait for your regular doctor to return to the country.
Good luck!

I know there are a few women on SC who are not technically IR but are on met to help with their PCOS. I am IR so I can't offer any personal advice on the subject.
Good luck.

FWIW, I have been on Met for a couple of months, and I was never tested to see if I am IR. I was diagnosed with PCOS due to the facial hair and unexplained rapid weight gain, as well as an ultrasound showing the cysts.
It has seemed to help me a lot. Maybe you could find a different dr? Have you had an ultrasound?
Good luck! PM me if you need to talk!

I'm not on Met right now, but I was when I was seeing my RE to conceive DD. I was never tested, he just put me on it. I stayed on it until I was 13 weeks pg with DD, when my OB wanted me off it. I hope to get another prescription next month, when we start TTC a little brother or sister for Elizabeth.

according to my last endo my labs were pretty normal....ummm...still no period, no ovulation...Met causes a balance in homone levels.......
I wouldn't listen to anything the nurse says, i would go back to the re and talk to her. She's the one who order the test. Insulin resistant shows up by weight in the front, dark skin patches, and skin tags are the most classic signs of IR.
Women who are on met, are on it to help control the symptomes of PCOS.
