I just received the results from bloodwork my dr ordered last week. According to the numbers, I'm perfectly normal and healthy except for my progesterone level. He checked cholesterol, TSH, Glucose, Creatinine, Globulin, Thyroid, Progesterone, Prolactin, Cortisol, and a bunch of other things that I'm not quite sure what they were but they were all normal. He also ordered a glucose tolerance test. I don't see LH or FSH on my list of tests and I know he didn't check my estrogen level.
Like I said, everything came back normal including the glucose tolerance test. So I don't have insulin resistance or anything like that. The ONLY test that wasn't normal was my progesterone which was 0.9 ng/ml. Apparently that's really low and proves I didn't ovulate this cycle.
I don't seem to fit the "profile" of someone with PCOS. Could I have something else that's causing me to have irregular periods and not be able to get pregnant? I'd hate to be focusing on PCOS when my real problem lies elsewhere.
You doctor should have clearly explained his/her reasoning for Dx'ing you with pcos.
Keep in mind that PCOS is a diagnosis of exclusion, so your doctor should have first EXCLUDED other things like Cushing's Disease (which has symptoms similar to PCOS) before settling on a PCOS diagnosis.
I would call your doctor and specifically ask, "What is your reasoning for my PCOS diagnosis?"

It was actually another dr that diagnosed me with pcos a few years ago. Not really sure what made him diagsnose me. He did some bloodwork and saw that I had really elevated estrogen levels.
My current dr just said that he saw now reason to disagree with the diagnosis. However, he's referring me to an ob/gyn for treatment. He wants the ob/gyn to do an ultrasound to look for cysts, how big they are, and how many they are.
I've looked at the symptoms of cushings, and it doesn't look like I have that. Is there anything else that causes you to have high estrogen levels, and low progesterone levels (and all the fun symptoms that go with it)? I've tried doing searches online, but it's hard to find anything when you don't know what you're looking for.
Hopefully your Ob/Gyn will not only do the Ultrasound but ensure you have the proper bloodwork done. You should have definitely been tested in terms of your FSH/LH levels. Bear in mind, not all women with PCOS have cysts in their ovaries (which seems weird...)
Depending on the care you receive from your Ob/Gyn you may want to look in to seeing an endocrinologist or RE, as they really know their PCOS stuff. I've found that some Ob/Gyns don't really know how to deal with and treat PCOS, much less diagnose it.

Hi and welcome! I'm a newbie too! I would call around to some endocrinologists in your area and see if any specialize in PCOS and then see them. They are the best ones to tell you if you have it....PCOS is as much if not more endo related over gyne related....weird but true! I was to one gyne and two endocrinologist before I had my dx.
Hi! I had normal blood work too. My insulin level was elevated, but all other hormones were normal. My OB/GYN decided to do an ultraound and found that my ovaries were enlarged. TA-DA!!! PCOS!
My advice: have your Dr. do an ultrasound just to make sure that your diagnosis is correct.
