Default lactic acidosis?

I have been taking 200mg metformin for 18 months now. However in the last few days i have been feeling unwell with aching in my calves and being slightly shorter of breath than usual. i know i am probably being a hypocondriac but could this be to do with metformin? Thanks!

I think lactic acidosis on Met is very rare. It got the reputation of causing it because an earlier class of the drug caused it. Other drugs, such as cholesterol meds, can cause the symptoms you are describing too. If you are suddenly having symptoms you describe, that is not normal. Please call your doctor.

LA is really rare (check out the FAQ thread..I think the average is .0003% of people on met). When it does occur, it is always accompanied by fairly swift onset and it involves things that can't be ignored as you go through your day...malaise, myalgias, respiratory and abdominal distress. The people who get LA usually have risk factors like liver/kidney issues etc.

If you're concerned, call your Dr, but definetly head to the FAQ thread...it will go over the risk factors, symptoms etc and will likely ease your mind. The studies being done now show that people on met have NO higher incidence of LA than the rest of the population and it isn't really a risk factor anymore..

Good luck!
