I need help!!! I was diagnosed yesterday with lactose intolerance and have no idea what to do. I was given a handout that briefly explained it and what to look for in food items. I swear everything has lactose in it!!!
I have an appointment with a dietician, but its not until next week and in the mean time I am at a total loss as to what I can eat. I have pretty much realized what I can't eat. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Oh, I am not allowed to use any soy substitutes, or lactaid, etc, for two weeks. They are trying to get my body back to normal before I introduce new substitutes and test what level or dairy I can tolerate.

I have lactose sensitivity. The dr won't go as far as to say it's intolerance as one of the tests came back inconcusive. There are a load of recipes and other such things for dairy free. We have my son on a low dairy, low gluten diet because of his autism. He responds better with it. Not sure why, but that's how I found all the recipes. There are meds that have lactose in them as well and you may want to ask your pharmacist about it. I found out that some forms of Metformin's generic ones have it and I just happened to be on one, no wonder it was bothering my stomach!!
Hope you are able to get everything worked out.
Stacy
on my safelist:
smart balance
goat milk
goat cheese
vegetables
fruit
meat
eggs
fish
at first it will seem like you can't eat ANYthing but really, there is so much you CAN. it's just a matter of looking for the recipes, experimenting with different foods and spices

I, too, am lactose intolerant, but I really like almond milk as I can't do too much soy either (due to my thyroid). I've found that there are certain dairy products I do okay with, such as feta cheese, goat cheese, parmesan, and some yogurts. As you get used to going dairy free, you'll find that it's not quite as restrictive as you think. Good luck and good health!
Hello,
I am severely lactose intollerant. I found this out almost 8 yrs ago at the age of 21. Before I found out I could eat anything that had dairy in it (pizza, milk, ice cream etc.) Then one day out of the blue, I had pizza and ended up in severe pain and on the toilet for what seemed to be all night!
Since that very day I have stayed clear from all dairy products! I read lables, and watch for milk, cheeses, whey powder, buttter & cream.
It sucks big time, as pretty well everything has some form of dairy in it. Also watch out for 'modified milk ingredients' this is whey powder or whey protein, which is milk.
If you want 'goodies' such as cakes, cookies etc., you have to make them yourself using Lactaid Milk (which is what I use). It works great and you wouldn't even notice the difference. This milk is the only milk I buy, as soy milk is thick and chalky tasting...gross.
Apparently goats milk & cheeses do not contain milk products. I haven't tried it, as I have heard bad things about how it tastes and I don't want to be the guinea pig lol.
The key thing is to read lables. You will get used to it and it will become a natural thing for you to do.
There is also Lactaid tablets that you can take. They come in a chewable form or a pill form. I use these when going out for dinner, as most restaurants don't tell you the truth as to if their food contains dairy products. Some people will guess, but that's not good enough when you have an allergy!
Good luck to you.

Most people in the world are lactose intolerant, so you are definitely not alone. It's not a crisis. For now, avoid milk, cream (and ice cream, etc.), sour cream, and soft or fresh cheeses. Cheeses that do not have sugar (like aged cheddar) do not have lactose (since lactose is a sugar). There is no need for adults to be able to digest milk, anyway. Cooking your own foods and just avoiding milk products (besides butter, aged/hard cheeses, and some yogurts) is the best way to go. I am lactose intolerant (as are many people of my ethnicity) and we do just fine.
Add me to the list of lactose intolerant/sensitive. Like the PP said, most people in the world are actually lactose intolerant. I don't drink milk anyway, but I have to be careful to avoid the dairy I do like (ice cream) or I regret it horribly. I do love cheese, and buy a sharp cheddar at the grocery that is lactose free.

I have lactose intolerance. I hate it. I love dairy products and like you said, lactose is in EVERYTHING! At least everything I like.
Is lactose intolerance associated with PCOS? I was not intolerant until about 2003 - a year later in 2004 I was diagnosed with PCOS.
I doubt there is a connection between PCOS and lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is biologically normal for most humans. Certain ethnicities have nearly 100% lactose intolerance rates (Native Americans are one).

I'm not lactose intolerant but my DH is. He found out when he was about 3 months old. they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him and he almost died from it.
We use Soy as the substitute. It a good thing I'm not a fan of Dairy products anyways. We manage...i have learned to like his type of foods. Some Really don't taste any different. If you make pudding with soy milk..it's NASTY.

I just found out this holiday that Costco has it's own version of Lactaid. It's quite a bit cheaper than the name brand. Just thought I'd through it out there.
For those of you that love dairy but hate popping pills with every meal, there are a few brands that cover you for 24 hours. I have had luck with Digestive Advantage brand, it just takes a few days for it to build up in your system. :-)
I have a very mild lactose intolerance and have since I was 5 or 6. I can eat basically anything I want even dairy I just have to monitor how much I'm eating. Still though I avoid it more times than not just because it really sucks when I figure it wrong and have to much. It really sucks cause I love milk and cheese andI'm very picky about them.
