Default Lap band for me?

I have PCOS and CANNOT lose weight. I have tried every diet, have been to countless nutrionists, specialists, ran multiple test, been on various weight loss meds and nothing. I can get to a certain # on the scale and no matter how I eat, good or bad, it never moves below that. Unfortunately it is 230lbs. The craziest thing is that I am very strict with what I eat an workout all the time. I am at the gym at least 5 days a week for 1-2 hours each day. I have switched up the workouts to see if that would help, but to no avail it deosn't. I have been consistent with exercise for 2 years now. My health has drastically improved, but only on the inside. On paper I look great, that is until you look at my weight. I have been thinking about lap band and know my Dr. would recommend it. My BMI is not 40, but I also have sleep apnea, and with the PCOS I am hoping insurance can approve it. The other problem is insurance.......... My husband was laid off from work in December and is eagerly waiting a phone call to come back. In the meantime we are without insurance!!! All my prescriptions are running out and we cannot afford to fill them. I am off YAZ already and my byetta is next. I am so obsessed with losing weight. I am set to pursue this when insurance is back, could anyone offer advise, inspriation, comments, ect.

Thanks a ton!
Jen

Jen...

Do it, I am in the process of getting everything done to have lap band surgery. My insurance does cover it and that is what pushed me to doing it.

My problem was figuring out what to have done, it actual was just today when I have fully decided to go with the lap band. I had and orientation for the procedure today where I was able to talk with a nurse that had it done. I have been going between the VSG (sleeve) and lap band. I ruled out RNY right away because I did not want to have parts re-routed in me or anything, plus they are seeing a lot of patients that had RNY come back in and have lap band done now. Actually someone in the seminar I went to about WLS had RNY and gained all the weight back after 5 years. So that was another reason why I ruled out RNY.

With the sleeve it removes 85% of your stomach and the part that controls your appetite. But like RNY after a few years they are finding patients put the weight back on. But I like the sleeve because of removing the appetite part, no re-routing and no foriegn object in my body. Also because of the rapid weight loss. I have about 150 lbs to lose and have been reading posts on obesityhelp.com and people are losing 100 lbs in 6 months.

I also really like lap band, the reason I decided today after going to the orientation that lap band is for me, is that the lap band is a tool that will help control my hunger and make me full. That if I feel I am able to eat a lot without feel full I can go to the doctor and get a fill and it will re-tighten the band back up and it is like having another WLS without going under the knife. Once the goal weight is reached they loosen the band a little so that you can maintain at that weight. After going there are so many pros to the lap band for me then the other surgeries.

If you do want to do this and I urge you to go to a WLS seminar. If you go to www.obesityhelp.com you can look up info in your state and see who is having a seminar. I found one that had a seminar on both RNY and Lap Band and went to that one and then did the research on the sleeve.

I wish you all the best and hopefully things will work out for you and your family where you will get insurance back soon. Starting to get everything together now will help speed things up when you have insurance to hopefully get WLS done fast.

Good luck!!!

I think the one reason why some people fail with the lapband is that they dont change their life. They do not exercise or eat healthy...which is a MUST with the lapband. The only thing it does is make you fill fuller fast...thats it!! Your stomach is not reprogrammed or re-routed at all.

So, I say if your already doing so great in those areas & need that push to get the weight off then GO FOR IT!! As soon as your DH gets insurance I would call & see what their requirements are.

I was a 39 BMI when i went for my first appointment but because of having horrible IR (borderline diabetic with GD when pg), high cholestrol, & had a history of being overweight for over 5 years (more like 11 erccckkk) I was approved 2 days after insurance got my paperwork..they must have not even batted an eye & I was as worried as can be.

I had my lapband done on 12/11 & it was a very simple surgery. I have lost a total of 56 lbs. I was a size 22 & now a size 16. The weight does NOT just fall off..i work hard at exercising 3-5 days a week & i changed my eatting habits. This not mean I dont have a day where I eat "No-No's" but I forbid to "diet" or be strict on myself. I enjoy things here/there & the rest of the time I eat like a healthy person would. It helps that I get full faster so when I do decide I want something "unhealthy" I cant eat but so much before I am full

If you have any lapband questions pm me!
