My sister had gastric bypass surgery 2 months ago and she looks great! I'm considering it and will bring it up with my doctor. I'm one of those people that eats really healthy and excercises a lot, but I gained 60 lbs with the PCOS when it was at its worst.
Also, I suffered from anorexia and bulimia when I was a teenager (I'm 29 now), so I'm not sure if I will even qualify even though I no longer have an E.D.
1 out of every 50 people die from gastric bypass, is what I've heard. Frankly, I don't think it's right for most people. For the most part, it's what's in our heads that's caused us to be overweight. I mean our eating habits and issues, etc. That's definitely how it is with me. I wanted a quick fix for a long time. But now I'm starting to really change the things in my head and heart, and that's automatically helping me change my body. I've lost 30 lbs. so far, in about 9 months, but the greatest thing is that food no longer rules ANY part of my life, and it always has to some extent. Plus, my cousin's best friend was in the hospital for 4 months, on the brink of death from gastric bypass. Yes, she looks great now, but what if she hadn't made it? She, like a lot of other people, is also gaining back some of her weight because she hasn't changed her insides in the same way her outsides have changed. Anywho, glad your sister is doing well, and will hopefully continue to do so.. Good luck! :o)

The Lap-Band surgery is the least risky and invasive and also isnt permanent. Its a temporary aid to decrease your appetite by pinching off part of your stomach so you eat less. But its very easy to gain all the weight back because its not permanent.
I have IBS so the Lap-Band isnt a good choice. I have been tossing around the idea for bypass surgery myself for about a year now. However there are a few things that make it hard for me to have the surgery. Like the recovery time. It can range between 2 weeks to a few months depending on the person and how well the surgery goes. And I cant afford to be off my feet for long. Also the post operation effects can be hard to manage. Some people can suffer from depression and while the weight drops off it leaves loose skin so, again depending on the patient, more surgery may be neccessary. My advice is to contact a doctor/surgeon and get all the info you can. Then make an educated choice. And dont fool yourself thinking this is a quick fix. Nothing is ever that easy.
Good luck!

Reason: added something
if you go to the diet and exercise forum there is a thread dedicated to WLS, all the ladies there are very friendly and helpful. You should go have a look!
My friend's brother has the lap-band and loves it, he's lost 75lbs.
I went for a gastric bypass consult, and know a few people who have had it... The doctor says to me, this is how you are going to lose weight and he puts two little cups on the desk. (they were smaller than niquil dosage cups, maybe an ounce) He says " you are going to eat this much three times a day" Another doctor I saw, I asked what the long term studies show...(there aren't any really) He says, "well the alternative is to die young from complications of obesity"
Needless to say I wasn't happy with either answer and opted not to have surgery. The lapband may help at controlling hunger cravings but it doesn't take care of the psychological reasons we eat.
How many of us eat when we aren't hungry??? The gastric bypass is basically forced annorexia. Which is worse??? Obesity or annorexia?? I think they are finding that people are gaining weight back b/c their stomachs have stretched and they are back to their old habits. Or b/c they can only have 2 ounces of food they don't 'waste' that room on nutritious stuff.
No matter what it is a difficult decision but I would only consider it if I knew it were my ONLY option. I know i've tried everything.. but I also know that it doesn't work b/c I don't stick with anything. That's my problem. So sugery isn't an option for me yet.

I've considered GB. DH basically forbids it because it's such a drastic measure and he can't see me altering my body to such an extent and risking death all because I'm fat...he doesn't mind me the way I am. LapBand may be an option, but again, it doesn't change the mental habits. It causes you to eat less, which in turn will probably help your stomach to shrink, but what happens when it's gone and you're able to eat more? We all know that there are those who go to buffets and overindulge to the point of pain (and stomach stretching), so what's to prevent that from happening again? Honestly, I think everyone who chooses GB or LB should have a mental health evaluation and have nutritional and psychological counselling while they are losing weight. Not because I think they're nuts, but because I think that this would help them to make healthy changes and also break cycles and in the long run it will help them to keep the weight off. The goal shouldn't be a quick fix because "I can't do it any other way". It should be a total mind-body makeover. This applies to myself as well. That's just my 2 cents.
