I am really nervous and kind of freaking out over my lap tomorrow. There's a 6 cm endometrial cyst on my left ovary, and the dr said there's a chance he'd have to remove the entire ovary if there's no cleavage point. The reason I even found out about the PCOS and endo was because we are ttc. I've only known about this stuff for a month and a half and now I'm faced with possibly losing my ovary. I'm really scared of losing my ovary, and scared of the surgery too. It seems like a big surgery, so I'm worried about the breathing tube and the pain afterwards.
Anyone have some positive stories about large ovarian cysts where the ovary was salvageable?
What about women with one ovary removed and were still successful TTC?
I would really appreciate some good stories and good vibes.
Thanks everyone

I am having a lap in just over a week to remove two 6cm cysts, one on each of my ovaries, so I can feel your anxiety completely! My RE said that any complication like that was quite rare though, very unlikely they would have to remove your ovary but they have to warn you....probably for liability's sake in the very unlikely event something horrible like that happened. Just like they have to warn you of all the 'worst case scenarios' before a surgery....side effects of the anaesthesia, etc.
It's all very cliché, but just try and focus on the positives. Hopefully they remove the cyst without complication, and you will be able to get back on the TTC wagon. I have heard lots of positive stories of women getting pregnant fairly quickly after a lap. Fingers crossed that we are both lucky like that!
I can imagine it must be difficult dealing with both diagnoses in the last month, I have known about my PCOS for some time but the endometriosis thing is pretty new to me too.
Take care and let us know how it goes.

Started TTC in Sep/07, with low GI diet and acupuncture.
4 cycles of Clomid Oct/08-Jan/09; all BFN.
Break from TTC from Feb/09-Jul/09 due to endometriomas on both ovaries. Laparoscopy on 06/30.
Thanks jcb, I think a lot of my thinking is from the fact that the surgery is tomorrow and I'm just full of nerves about the whole thing!
I will think positive thoughts for both of us, and I'll let you know how it goes as soon as I'm able to write!!! Everyone on here keeps saying that the surgery is usually fairly smooth - hopefully we both find the same thing!
How long have you been TTC?
We've been TTC since September 2007. Did four rounds of Clomid from October 2008 - January 2009, which is when they found the cysts and I've been on an involuntary break ever since. At first they thought they were physiologic cysts, but the last two ultrasound reports say endometriomas. Best case scenario they remove the cysts, my tubes and everything else are all clear, and we can start TTC again fairly soon, probably with the help of Clomid. Worst case scenario, we have to do IVF if there is scarring or other issues because of endo. There are actually a lot of 'worst case scenarios' other than that, but I'm trying not to go there
I am sure I will be feeling as nervous as you next week when it is my turn. I hope you manage to have a good sleep tonight. Did you have to do a fast before the surgery? How long have you been TTC?

Melissa - I didn't have endo on my ovaries, but it screwed up my tubes pretty good. I didn't have much pain after the surgery and I don't recall having a sore throat. I've heard of ladies concieving with only one ovary. So, I basically just wanted to say good luck tomorrow!
Jane - Good luck to you too. I hope your surgery goes well.
Melissa, thinking about you this morning and sending your way!
Thanks Renee! Looks like you'll be having your wee one when I'm recovering from the lap, awesome! Good luck with it and congrats!

Theres a reason why we have two Ovaries...and that is, incase one go defunct, we got another! I wouldn't worry too much about that. As for the breathing tube, you really dont know it was (specifically) ever in. For me, it just felt like I had a little bit of a sore throat--like waking up after going to bed with a wet head Its not so bad, plus your all hyped up on drugs, you you really cant feel anything
Bless you, and good luck.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, the surgery was a bit more intense than we expected. I only had to fast from midnight the night before the surgery, and it was scheduled for 7:45AM, so not that bad. I had to stay overnight at the hospital Monday night because my blood pressure wouldn't regulate. When I got out of surgery every time they tried to set my feet on the ground my bp would bottom out and I'd pass out and I'd get sick. It made for a long day of fluids and trying to sit me up, then me getting sick/passing out. They were about to give me a blood transfusion b/c my hemoglobin levels were so low, but my bp finally started coming up. Not fun! DH was a trooper through it all, and was super supportive. It was pretty scary for me, so it was nice to have him there when the nurses couldn't be there. The doc said that he wasn't surprised at how my body reacted though because they did a lot more surgery than he expected to do...so my body just needed extra time to recover. And I just didn't react well to anaesthesia in general.
The 6cm cyst they found on the u/s was not endo. They don't know what it is yet, the dr is waiting for the pathology on it and I won't find out for 2 weeks, so I guess that's whats makind me nervous now. On the positive side, I still have 2 ovaries!!! And my fallopian tubes weren't blocked, but there was endo on them he was able to remove. I did have a bunch of endo in different places, and have pictures of it, but I don't remember all of what the doc said to me b/c of how sick I was at the hospital so I'll find out more when I go in for my follow up.
I'm sore, and so incredibly puffy from the surgery. I'm happy to be healing and to have it behind me, and I'm pretty anxious to find out all the dr has to say about it.
I'm not in unmanageable pain, and I'm so happy to be "cleaned up" and to have both my ovaries so I'm glad I had it done. The scariest part was my bp problems, and they said that the reaction I had was super rare. I did have a slightly scratchy throat Monday, but ice chips helped that a ton.
I had an awesome nurse while I was inpatient. We got to talking and she was 18 wks pg, and has pcos as well. She conceived naturally after reading taking charge of your fertility, and I'm hoping to try and do the same, or at least try naturally for a few months without this cyst before starting clomid. I've got a while to think about it though, because drs orders, no sex for 6 weeks!! We'd been trying for a little less than a year before I found out about the endo/pcos. in May
I'd like to say thanks so very much for the positive thoughts and thoughtful answers from all of you. Feel free to ask me any other questions, the whole story and everything I'm feeling is probably too long and TMI It's so nice to have a place to go and ask questions!!! I look forward to finding out what this cyst actually was now!
I'll try and come on a bit more often, but I'm sleeping a lot from the pain meds. Good luck to all of you with laps coming up and i hope for a speedy recovery and easy surgeries!!!
Hey Melissa! Glad to hear you are recovering well, sounds like you had a long couple of days but were in good hands between DH, the awesome nurse and your Dr. I hope you hear soon what the 6cm cyst was; perhaps just a physiologic cyst? And yay for both ovaries staying where they are supposed to!!

Another question for anyone who is reading this and has had a lap - did you have a lot of swelling even 5 days afterwards? I just noticed that I no longer have a waistline on my left side (the side they removed the cyst from). It is actually straight while my right side has retained its' figure. I'm like half girl half 12 year old boy. My lower abdomen is also still fairly swollen, but it's not as bad as my side.
And this isn't a question but all this bruising is showing up now. I was trying to sleep on my side and noticed my hip hurt really bad. I looked the next time I went to the bathroom and there is a hand-shaped bruise on my hip. Not sure who had to grab me so hard but holy crap! This surgery must be violent!
