Question Laproscopic Ovarian Drilling & Endo diagnosis

I'm not sure if I have posted this in the right section- but I'm hoping someone can provide some info based on their own experiences. I will try to keep this short.

A few months ago I started having problems with my periods. I ended up at a gyno who first prescribed primolut-N to bring on my period. Anyway 2nd cycle in, I ended up with a massive migraine. Upon return to the gyno he told me he didn't think I had endometrosis or polycystic ovaries, but when I refused other treatments, he agreed to do a laproscopy and check the organs out - the result? He found endometrosis on my uterus & polycystic ovaries (which he drilled).

Now I am recovering and am waiting to see him in 4 weeks - in the meantime I am not on any drugs or anything, but am wondering if anyone can share their next steps after having this done? I have tried google without success, so am now trying here.

Will he be likely to prescribe metformin do you think or what will be his next steps? I am anti BCP's as I believe that the BCP's / implanon implant I had been on for years caused my hormone imbalances and masked my condition in the first place.

Thanks
Taff

Hi Taff

I responded to your other thread in the Endometriosis forum.

I've also just had a lap/ovarian drilling and curette 2 weeks ago. I see my gyn for my follow up appointment on the 7th September, so I'm interested in what he suggests then.

They didn't find endo which is surprising considering the pain I get, but my ovaries were covered in cysts.

Hope you're recovering ok from your surgery hun!

Thanks puppylove

for me it is the fear of the unknown.

Also the fact that I can't get a straight answer from the husband as to whether he actually wants to ttc as i am aware that the ovarian drilling is only meant to last 6-8 months before similar problems will recur.

I wish I knew what to expect - I hope your recovery is also going smoothly

I have never had the ovarian drilling but I have had three laps and D&C to remove endo. I would have to agree with you about the bcps masking symptoms. I just recently went off of bcps to see what would happen with going "natural" - acupunture, supplements, diet, etc. I realized I have been on bcps for 20 years (except for 2 pg and ttc 2 pg)! THat shocked me truthfully. I thought how do I know what my body can and can't do if something is dictating what it should do? So I am giving it a chance to straighten out on its own. Will it work? I have no idea.
As for metformin, I was on that for 4-6 weeks when I was ttc and got pg with my 2nd dd. I think it is probably a good option for some people - from what I have heard - and I have not ruled out going on it again if need be. When I was on it before I had some digestive issues with it but it wasn't anything I was say was bad enough to keep from doing it again. GL!

I've also had the lap/ovarian wedge (rather than drilling). Like PuppyLove, no endo even though I get severe cramps. The next time I went to the doc, he discussed options with me such as Metformin and Sprironolactone. He started me on just Met, to get me used to it and added the Spiro later.

Oh, and since they didn't find anything to cause the pain and I am not ttc right now (or any time soon), I asked to just get rid of Aunt Flo and now I'm on the shot with no Aunt Flo and no pain. Yea!

Hi!
I had a diag. lap surgery which included removing endo, a large cyst on left ovary, 2/3 of my left fallopian tube due to scarring, a polyp in my uterus, and ovarian drilling.
I was already on Metformin for 6 months, and had been on BCP for 2 yrs. After the surgery I came off the BCP.
I really think Metformin is the way to go, but you have to be committed to taking it for at least 3 months before giving up due to side effects. They do go away. That has helped me tremendously with my PCOS issues.
If for some reason he won't prescribe Met. and you can't find another doctor, you should look into goat's rue or cinnamon. If you don't want to go the BCP route, I would start taking Vitex. I know you see alot on the TTC boards about it, however, it is just as beneficial to someone not TTC if your not.

I had OD and a Lap 6/2009 for PCOS and Endo( Very Little). He drilled 15-20 holes per ovary and is very confident, He tested my insuling resistance and my Insulin levels, My Fasting Glucose was great and I am not Insulin Resistant, but i do have slightly high insulin levels, so he decided to start me at the beginning dosage of clomid( Since the drilling makes you be anti clomid resistant, You need very little to make a big effect). He started me on 50mg clomid and 2000mg metformin to " see what happens". There has been a pattern in my bbt charts with a clear biphasic change for the past two months. but honestly, i have not seen any great impact with adding the metformin this cycle, its still the same for me.. I do however, trust my Dr with everything my future holds in baby making, he has done nothing but bring on the positive and help me keep smiling, so anything they suggest, if you like and trust you Dr, trust his suggestions and remember, we know our stuff and they certainly know their stuff, and combined, success is only a matter of time!!! best of Luck, If you have any other questions about OD stuff, dont hesitate to ask........ I can even ask my Dr your questions if needed, I see twice a month and hes AMAZING!!!!.. Stay Positive!!!

Well, either I have the weirdest gyno on earth, or I am not as severe of a case than I was made to believe (which means I really feel for everyone else on the board!)

I went there, he said, "did i tell you what I did?" I said, sort of, and he said "You have endometrosis on the left hand side of your pelvis, and your right ovary was covered in cysts; anyway I drilled your cysts and burnt your endometrosis off. There is no cure, so next steps are to just monitor you until you get worse".

I said, "so does that mean I'll have trouble getting pregnant?" he said, "probably" I said, "do you want to see me again?" he said "no, just come back when it gets bad again and I'll do the same thing again".

Then I mentioned that I have had an increase in acne, and hair growth since surgery, and he just said it's hormonal. No need for medications, unless it gets worse.

And that was it.

So I am going to go down the alternative remedy path, and attempt to eat well (to try to lose weight). I will see how I go over the next few months (baby dust please ) and will keep you posted.

Hope all is good with everyone today
Taff

I had the same thing done, but then my doctors put me on Lupron Depot shots to try and keep the endo and cysts from coming back. Helped a lot. I'm not ttc so while the fake menopause u get on the shots suck, it seemed like my best option. Hope that helps... I suggest getting all your medical records and seeing another dr who will put you on something besides just bcp's if ur symptoms are very troublesome.
