Since I was 14 (I'm 25 now) I have been getting large cysts on my ovaries that always bursts. The first time this happened I was in the hopsital for 3 days because they thought it was my appendix. Then they thought I had PID for years before finally they gave me an ultrasound and saw that I had 1-3 large cysts. At first I only got them once every two or three years, but for the past two years I get them once every few months. I always know when I have them because my symptoms are the same. TMI I know, but my nipples get very sore a day or so before they burst. When they burst I am in so much pain I cant walk and I can barely talk. I used to go to the ER, but they never did anything for me so I just take a pain pill now.
When I say large cysts, my doctor found two on my right ovary last year that he said were the size of an orange. After my exam I went home that night and they both popped, I couldnt walk for a day. I've been on birth control since it first happened, 11 years ago. When I asked my doctor if there is anything that can be done he says no, just stay on the bc it should help. (He also calls me Cyst Queen, which I feel like slapping him across the face when he does this because if he only knew what it felt like and he is not funny)
I'm really worried that I will have trouble getting pregnant when I try. I am 25 now and would like to start trying at 27 or 28. I have tried to get off the bc pills but that led me right back to irregular periods, sometimes twice a month for two days, or sometimes two weeks straight.
Anyhow, sorry for rambling. This is getting out of hand though. I was laid off in November and as I am not married yet I dont have insurance. I don't want to spend a lot of money to go to the dr. and he tell me what I already know, I have cysts, nothing can be done.
Anyone have this problem or heard of it? Dr. said its not PCOS because PCOS is a lot of tiny cysts. I just get real big ones.
I have PCOS every once in a while I get a large cyst, man those hurt!
One of my sisters gets very large cysts on occasion too, however she does not have PCOS and she had no problems getting pregnant.
I have a half sister who doesn't have PCOS, she almost lost an ovary due to a torsion cyst and came close to death from that cyst but they managed to save her and her ovary and she has managed to become a mom without any problems.
Attykins,
I get those cysts (in addition to having the small cysts w/ PCOS). The best thing to do to prevent them is, unfortunately, to take BCP. That keeps them from developing (I know how freaking painful they can be, I too used to have to go to the ER for them). My RE has explained to me the difference between PCOS cysts and the large ones that i get. PCOS cycts are follicles that are in the stage between dormant and mature. If you have PCOS, each ovary can have around 10-15 of these. The large cysts are actually the corpeus luteum that doesn't dissolve after ovulation, the body usually dissolves these on it's own, but some bodies can't/don't do that all the time, so instead of dissolving, they grow until they burst. The Dr. said the good news is, this indicates ovulation (you don't get a corpeus luteum w/ out ovulation). The bad news is, that it's painful, and it can also disrupt your hormone levels and cause irregular periods, delaying the onset of your period, and preventing ovulation the following month. My RE says that to avoid the corpeus luteum cyst, you need to stay on BCP. Except if you're trying to conceive, you'll have to go off the bcp, and you can proceed with TTC naturally, hoping you can "catch" the egg that is released. He said most couples get a once a month chance, but with women with these kind of cysts, you ovulate less than every other month, sometimes only 4 times a year, so it really reduces the amount of times you can try to get pregnant. You also don't know when the egg will be reduced because you can't follow a calendar the way most normal women can. That makes it even harder, but seeing an RE helps because he/she can monitor your ovaries and hormones and advise you of what phase of your cycle you are in.
Anyway, hope this helps. I'm 28 and have been dealing with these cysts for over 10 years now, so I truly feel your pain!
