I would really like to get some laser treatment but I'm a little concerned because my skin is pretty dark and I've heard that besides being ineffective when your skin is dark they can also cause pigment changes/bleaching .
are there lasers approved for dark skin ? and how effective are they ? I remember hearing that coolglide and lightsheer are the best but I wasn't sure if they're approved for dark skin. Are they ? would anyone know what is the best laser for dark skin ?

There are lasers which can work with darker skin and there are techniques for using lasers with darker skin too. But the bottom line is that all lasers work on the contrast between the color of the hair and the color of the skin and the fact that dark hair absorbs more heat than the lighter skin and so can be destroyed by heat being conducted to the root of the hair in sufficient quantities to destroy the root but not to destroy the surrounding skin.
By far the best candidates for laser are women with fine, very black hair and very pale skin.
Remember, too, that for laser to work long-term you need to get your hormones into the normal female range. Otherwise, shaving's a more realistic answer.
The laser recommended for your darker skin is called the ND Yag laser. (strange name, I know). For those with lighter skin and darker hair the best laser is the Alexandrite. I don't know where you live but in Dallas I can tell you from experience (after using 4 of the big names around here) that Smooth Solutions has the BEST equipment by far. My results have been astounding. Be ready to do at least 4-5 treatments spaced out 8-12 weeks apart(and the 6th is free). I'm almost a year into this and can go 3 mos before I see ANYTHING at all. There are some areas that have still not grown back and my last big treatment was in August. I can tell you I had the most course, black hair and never thought I'd be looking this good. It may take a few months but if you have the results I had then you won't even have those stupid black "dots" after 2-3 treatments. You know, the hair just under the skin that looked like tiny spots. Well, mine have been gone so long I almost forgot about them. (and no , I do NOT work for or have any financial interest in this company.) I'm just a woman who finally decided I had to change things. Expensive, yes. But more than worth every penny. Maybe that company could recommend someone with similar equipment in your area (assuming you are not in the North Texas area). Good luck to you. Yes, I do have light skin with dark hair. I would not have even known about the ND Yag laser if I had not met 2 ladies of African-American descent coming in at the same time as me. I heard the attendants/technicians say they were in to use the ND Yag. Since I had been using the Alexandrite I wanted to know more about the laser with the strange name. They said it was for people of color and worked differently from the Alexandrite. All I really knew at that point was that the Alex. laser targeted pigment so it passed thru my light skin and "zapped" the dark hair/roots. Her explanation for the ND Yag did not make much sense to me-and everyone seemed hurried so I dropped it. Later I got the chance to ask those 2 ladies about their results and they were SO happy. One said she did not mind her husband reaching out to touch her anytime-she knew she was smooth. I've since asked a ton of questions every time I go in and I've learned there is another new -generation laser coming and it is expected to outdo everything else out there now. Don't know much yet but when I get a name and a time frame for wide-spread availablity I'll pass it on. And I'll be using it myself and if it is everything they say it is I'll post here too. Were you pleased with your results ? and did you find it worked on the finer dark hair ? (I have enough of the course hair but it seems I'm also getting covered in a coat of dark fuzz which I am fearing might be impossible to laser)

I was THRILLED with the results. I only had regrowth for a period of time when my weight went up. I took the weight off, and the growth slowed back down.
Laser was one of the best investments I ever made.
Re: Fuzz. I think as long as the hairs are dark enough, the laser will get them.
