I just recently had my 3 laser treatment done on my chin and lip area. I still have yet to see any hairs falling out. I have noticed that the hairs on the right side of face are growing in blonde. Does anyone know if thats normal? I will be having my 4th treatment later this month. I'm disappointed that I'm still having to shave every other day.

What is the best laser for brown skin? I appreciate any suggestions. Any idea on laser consultants in Irvine, CA area?
From what I've read, Lightsheer Diode or YAG lasers are your best bet for treating darker skin.

There's a forum on this site below, which IMO is one of the most informative places (aside from this site) for everything about any type of hair removal. www.laserhairremoval.com I feel it's VERY important to research thoroughly which lasers are the best for your skin type, in addition to finding the most trained/skilled laser tech who will do it....especially since this is such a large financial investment - you really want to get the best results possible. Be sure to ask them about training, how many patients they've worked on...etc.

I had my 1st treatment last night on my Neck/chin. My neck today is very razor rash looking. I couldnt even leave my house because its like a bad rash. Is that normal?

I called the center I had it done at and they say it is. I guess the neck is so sensitive and sometimes does that. I wish I had known it was going to be this bad on day 2 so I would have scheduled it on friday.

It doesnt itch, its starting to have a pimple effect where its scabbing and such. Im just so worried now.

Default question for ladies with darker skin

I have a lot of facial hair (practically a beard, with most of the hair under the chin area), and I've had to shave pretty much every day for several years now. Also, a few years ago I tried plucking which was a disaster. The combination of plucking and daily shaving has led to lots of scarring on my skin, and it is also becoming somewhat leathery texture. I am African American, and the scars are rather dark. I would like to know if any other ladies with darker skin and scarring have had any success with laser hair removal. My main concern is that since the laser is seeking out dark areas, it may have difficulty differentiating between the dark hair that needs to be removed and the dark scarring. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Wishingwell- Thanks for the info, I am getting gentle YAG.
Kindred: I have brown skin, I have some dark pigment underneath my chin from electrolysis. I got my first laser treatment on Jan 25th. I felt like my hairs were not falling out, so 1 week later I went and got electrolysis. I decided to ditch laser. But since then I have had no hair growth. Its been more than a week and I have no hairs. I am really happy with my results. I would highly recommend seeing a dermatologist for consultation and then get your laser Gentle YAG in your dermatologist office. Make sure you go to a good dermatologist. It's better than plucking, waxing and electrolysis. As long as your hairs are darker than your skin laser will work.

I'm medium brown, but had the darker pigmentation you speak of. Some of that is collagen, and some of it is hair beneath the skin.

Like the PP, I'm also getting Gentle Yag with no problems. I'm also using Tri Luma cream to lighten the hyperpigmentation. most of the spots were gone in less than 2 weeks.

Where in North Carolina are you? I'm currently getting treatment in Raleigh.

Thanks sharihar and Kat!
Sharihar - Unfortunately, I don't have insurance right now. So I can't afford to see a dermatologist. I am currently saving up right now to hopefully start laser treatments some time this spring.

Kat - I now live in Graham, but I work in RTP. I just moved from Garner almost a year ago, so I am familiar with Raleigh. Your post has given me some hope. I'm medium brown as well. I had no idea that some of the pigmentation could be hair beneath the skin. I just googled Tri Luma cream. That looks like a great product! Do you have to have a prescription for it? I've been trying to find a good foundation to use to cover the scarring, but I haven't had much success in finding anything that's a good match to my skin tone and also provides good coverage. I've tried different shades of Revlon color stay, but they all looked to cakey/ashy after drying. I've also tried a couple different shades of Loreal true match, but had a similar problem with that as well. I'm on a strict budget, so I can't experiment with dept. store brands right now.

I didn't either until I started seeing a new derm in Raleigh last month. I put a link to their office here: http://www.soulcysters.net/1888921373-post133.html

That's also where I'm getting my laser done. Excellent service. Excellent prices.

Yes, it's Rx, and not cheap. My mouth dropped when the pharmacist said $124 for the tube! To make matters worse, insurance won't cover it at all. The upside is that its a BIG tube that should last me at least a year - if not more. AND the stuff works. I've used it for about 2 weeks now, and the spots are GONE - poof! Even the older, darker spots are completely gone. I don't even think that I used a teaspoon worth of the cream in that two weeks - you only need a teensy, teensy bit at night.

In the past, I had used a combination of Retin-a Micro and Melanex, but Tri-luma works way better, and faster. Don't waste your money on the dept/drug store stuff. Save up for Tri-luma. It will be WAY worth it.

Next time you're in Raleigh, go to Crabtree Mall to the Sephora store there. Look for the Make Up Forever line. They have a foundation in a glass bottle that says something like 'face and body' make up. It's an oil-free liquid/gel. You can layer it to get the coverage you want. Plus it's transfer resistant and water resistant. You can literally slather that stuff on, and it won't look cakey or ashy (unless you buy the wrong color). That particular foundation is what they used on everyone on Baywatch - head to toe.

Sephora 'used' to give samples of foundation, so test the colors and ask if they still give free samples.

BUT...if you want THE best coverage ever, head over to the MAC boutique (also in Crabtree Mall). You want Studio Tech (it's an oil free gel cream compact), and Studio Fix (it's a foundation powder).

Even though they are each 'foundations' to be worn alone, I've found that the combination of a light layer of Studio Tech, followed by a light dusting of Studio Fix gives the best coverage - very natural, very flawless.

I've worn these foundations from MAC and Make Up Forever for at least 10 years, or more. (I'll be on QVC on Monday (wearing my MAC combo), if you get a chance to tune in. If you think we're the same color, I"ll send you the shade numbers that I wear.)

Both MAC and MUF are pricier than drugstore brands, but they work, and they last a lonnnnnnnnng time.

I've posted before, but I am African american and I used to wax and pluck my beard which left dark spots. I had laser with a dermatologist who is African American. She used Cool Glide, which is specific for dark skin. The laser worked miracles. The spots lightened and disappeared. I used Vaniqa in conjunction with the laser. Its been 2 years since my first laser and approximately 9 months since my last laser tx and I am getting the hair back. I've been shaving about once a week, not plucking. So far, no dark spots. The dr might be able to prescribe a lightening cream for your spots also. Not sure if I want to invest in laser right now as I'm hoping to get pregnant. But to tell you how much of a difference the laser made for me, the dr took before and after photos to show other patients. You cannot even tell I ever had dark spots.

How long ago and for what duration?
I just had my second treatment...apparently I will need 6 on every part.

How many actual treaments did you receive?
2 so far.

What color is the hair that was being treated?
Dark brown, and THICK.

What color/shade is your skin?
Light.

Do you know what setting the technician used?
22 the first time on my face, 24 the second. 24 on my stomach, and 22 on the area around my nipples.

What were/are your results?
I see a lot of improvement already...in my face the hair is growing a lot slower and on my stomach a lot of it just flat out melted away after the first treatment.

How much did it cost?
100 for half hour.

Would you do it again?
I plan on finishing my face, stomach, nipples, then getting my arms, thighs, butt and upper back done. I'm a full body project...a regular Chewbacca.

Did insurance cover any of it?
Nope. I have tried and tried, but they call it cosmetic. BULL.
------------

It never goes away... but the stomach hair DID seem to melt away. The chin hair, nipple hair, still needs touch up work.

Red face Has anyone heard of laserscope?

I went to a consultation to a place called newskin. I live in a small town and its the only place in town who does laser hair removal. It's a real nice clean place everything looks very professional, they told me that the laser they use is laser scope. I read alot of your posts( but not all of them) and so far i seen anyone say they used laserscope. So could anyone tell me if it's anygood? this is my first time on the pcos message boards. Ihave thick hair under my chin and sideburns. i am medium brown half mexican. it will be 75$ a session. she said i can pluck afterwards.

Did she explain why you would be able to pluck? Most places tell you NOT to pluck in between laser sessions.

Can some one tell me when the hair should fall after getting laser treatment? I try to use my tweezer to pull on the hair to see if it is loose enough to fall. Am I doing something wrong? I have had two session of gentle yag and I have not noticed hair falling off by itself. Some hairs come off easily when I try to tweeze.
