Has anyone of you had laser hair removal treatment in Canada? I'm wondering how much it will cost, if costs vary from place to place, and where would be a good place to go to have it done (I live in Victoria but I could go to Vancouver if that'd work best for me). I'm also worried about the pain factor. I am such a wimp! For years I have gone to have electrolysis done and I have ended up in tears many times because my face is so sensitive.
Do any of you have stories to share regarding this??
I went for a consult here in Edmonton. Cost really depends on how much hair you have, how thick it is, etc. They told me that the lighter your skin, and darker your hair, the better your chances are of permanent hair removal (assuming your hormones are controlled, of course). They also said it feels like someone snapping a rubber band against your face, but that they could give some anesthetic cream beforehand if necessary.
They quoted me a price of $300/treatment, and told me I would need between 4 and 8 treatments. Needless to say I have not gone yet. It's choosing between saving for a house and having hair removal that gets me.
Hope this was at least a little useful. Good luck.
I had my facial hair lasered about 3 years ago at Hassan and Wong Laser Treatment Ctre on Broadway in Vancouver.
Full face treatment was about $350 every session and I went for 3 treatments.
The feeling = If you have done electrolysis, it feels just like it except it zaps continuously on several follicles in one area for 5 seconds and then you get a break.
Personally I feel laser hurts more than electrolysis, plus it really didn't get rid of my hair - my acne got better though!
I'm now just waxing and doing electrolysis, it costs less and hurts less.
You should try one session on one small area - that way it would cost less if you decide you can't tolerate the pain.
Good luck!

Thanks for the information ladies.
$300.00 hmmmm? I think I'll look into it. It'd take a while to save the money but I mean electrolysis adds up over time as well.
Well ladies,
I'm not sure if any one of you read my other message about my trip to the dermotologist. Basically I found out that a nurse who works in his office does laser hair removal and so I asked to speak with her. Next thing I knew I had set up an appointment and I had my first treatment on Tuesday morning. It was neat! Virtually painless !! I'm such a wimp about pain too; I've gone for electrolysis for years for my face and it has brought me to tears on a couple occasions. But for the most part I didn't even feel the laser. And it was so much faster. My appointment took less than ten minutes.
Price-wise it's a bit expensive. My session was $150. The nurse said that it'll take at least 3-5 appointments every couple months or so (depending on how fast the hair grows back.) But I'm glad I'm doing it. I've poured so much money into electolysis anyway. Plus, I was getting body hair removed and I'm a bit shy so the short and infrequent appointments will suit me well.
For those in the Victoria area, my dermotologist is Dr. Christiansen at 911 Yates St. I think the nurse's name is Barbara (she didn't tell me her last name).
I was very exited after my first laser treatment wich was more or less the same price as yours and after 5 sessions, I must admit that I was getting discouraged. Hair were still growing and growing and growing.
I have spent more than 1000$ in total and IT IS STILL THERE. If your hormones are not under control (like is was an still is my case) a little advice, don't waist your money. Wait until all the males hormones (ie: androstenedione, DHEA and testosterone) are within normal ranges.
I must admit that it was almost pain free for the first 3 treatments than it got bad, really bad. Since the hair were always growing back, the technician had to increase the strenght of the laser.
Good luck!
Coniela

Thanks for the response and advice Coniela ! It's good to hear what other women have experienced. I'm definately going to keep in mind the fact that erratic hormones will have an effect on the hair growth, that's a relevant point. But for now I think I will proceed with it and see how it goes. If I notice that the hair is still coming back after a couple more sessions, and that the difference isn't what I'd hoped, then I'll probably stop. It's just that I've been so shy about my body for so long that this feels almost empowering in a backwards sort of way. I mean, yes, I am altering my body to conform to socially constructed ideals of femininity but at least I feel like I'm facing this insecurity. If it doesn't completely get rid of the hair but lessens the amount I have that will still be okay, I guess. Then if I wind back in the electrolysis chair I won't have as much pain to endure!
