I have wondered the same thing.........tried electroylsis about 10 years ago and didn't love the results....spots, pain and the hair still came back, ugh!
From what I have read, on this site as well as others is that most people have very positive results from laser hair removal as long as their hormone levels are under control and stay under control. If things get out of wack again or are so to begin with then the hair will come back.

HI,
I really think it depends on the individual and your hormone levels. Last year I wanted to try laser hair removal but the doctor said it was probably not worth it because of my hormone levels and the roots of my hair were light so that also went against me trying it.
I am seriously thinking about getting laser removal (after noah is born, lol)
Is it worth it? Will the hair stay gone, or will it grow back? I jsut don't want to waste my money!
*IF your hormone levels are in the normal female range and can be kept there continuously * IF the hair you want to have lasered is very dark * IF your skin is very light
then laser may work quite well.
However if all three of these are conditions are not true, then it's not likely to be very long-lasting in its effects.
Electrolysis is not likely to be permanent unless your hormones are in the normal female range. It may also cause bad scarring if the hair being removed is very coarse.
It didn't work for me, even though my facial hair was darker, they said it was not dark enough. I spent a lot of money...then again, this was before I was diagnosed with PCOS. I have friends that have tried it, and it has worked great for them.
I think its worth every penny I spent! I have tried electrolysis and it was painful, also costly, it left pitting scars, and takes months and months to complete. I had my upper lip done 5 years ago and no regrowth. I am now working on my chin and love the results. Call around when checking on pricing. There are several places in my town and they all range much different in price. The one I am doing now was like $250, but they do all the touchups for one year, free.

Well, shoot.....I'm going to give it a try......after I have this baby
My doctor says laser is safe during pregnancy & breastfeeding. The laser only penetrates 3-4 cm through the skin, not very deep at all. He says it is probably safer than other forms of hair removal like depilatories.
I originally tried LHR about 9 years ago when it came out here, and it didn't really work for me long-term, since I wasn't on any sort of drug treatment. They used too high a setting on me, and left me with some pigmentation problems. Well, basically they burned my skin!
I went to visit with a doctor in cosmetics recently and he was VERY informed about PCOS. I felt like I was talking to an Endocrinologist.
He took a lot of time with me, and explained about how the lasers have changed in the last decade.
He told me that even though I am light-skinned, my genetic background (I'm Arabic) should be considered because I could have more pigmentation in my genes, though I don't show it on my skin. So he suggested a certain setting for me that wasn't as harsh as last time.
I had my first treatment this week, boy did it hurt! But I hope it'll be worth it. I have dark hair, and light skin, and I'm currently on Diane-35 (which is helping with my excess hair growth, too). I'm also going to look into starting Metformin again(which doesn't directly affect hair, but it does help regulte insulin, which I believe in time, helps regulate other hormones in the body which do ultimately affect hair).
I see my family doctor tomorrow, I'm going to have him check my hormones to see just where I am at with my levels while on the pill, and ask about the Metformin.
BTW, I'm paying almost $300.00 (Canadian) a session, and he recommends 12 sessions. (I am having my full face & neck treated).
I agree with Joyblack's post highlighting those 3 factors, as well.
