Default leg cramps, what do U do?

i was awoken at 6am this morning by a oh so wonderful leg cramp in my calf. it lasted for about ten minutes (i kid u not, i looked at the clock) and it was SO painful i was crying really hard and i still feel lightheaded. i mean, i didn't even whine this much after having both kids by cesarean. anyways, do any of you know what possible causes might be and what you do to help them go away, thanks!

If you point your heel, it helps it go away. It's called "dorsiflexing" your foot, because you flex your toes up. My mom got them all the time when she was pregnant with me, and she got to the point where she'd dorsiflex her foot in her sleep! Anyway, it can be caused by low potassium or dehydration. So, I'd say drink plenty of fluids and eat a banana! Good luck!

I get them occasionally in the night, always have. I can usually feel them coming on so I reach down and grab hold of my toes and pull them back. Once it releases so you can actually move, go stand on some cool linoleum/tile and stretch it out a little.
Good luck!

I used to get these all the time- from childhood. The best thing to do so they don't last long is to walk. I know it sounds impossible, but it does work! Nothing like getting up at 2am with a calf cramp and walking around the room.

In the long term I've found that regular cardiovascular excersise keeps them at bay. As long as I workout 3x a week I don't get them

I used to have them really bad like you described and usually only at night. The next day my calf muscles were so sore it was crazy. They occassionally happen in my feet as well. Anyway the doctor had me take calcium supplements as well as Magnesium-Oxide. I haven't had one since. Both supplements are available at the pharmacy, (the mag-ox was behind the counter here)

Try having one in your foot and leg at the same time. I just want to die when that happens. Mine has been more since I had back surgery. My leg was affected by my back injury. I have heard though that upping your potassium can help.

mine are totally related to my fluid intake.... if i don't drink enough water during the day, i get one at night. i agree, they are soooo painful -- they just wake you right up out of a deep sleep. good luck

Dehydration and skipping my potassium prescription bring mine on.

If you ever get a bad charley horse that will not release no matter what you do and it lasts for hours, get to the ER and have them check you for a DVT. I got one 3 weeks after ankle surgery and only went to the ER to humor my doctor. They did a sonogram of my leg and my doctor was right. Because I didnt' go right away when I was told to, (I finished work first) he always asks if I've had symptoms of another clot and reminds me that I am go to directly to the ER if I get them again.

Yes, flex your foot. Do not point it. Flex it, no matter how much it hurts.

If they continue, get a Pottassim, Magnesium and Calcium Supplement. DH gets them in his feet if he does not take the supplement.

To get them to go away fast we keep a heavy duty massager in the night table. (I know what you are thinking, get your minds out of the gutter!) I put it on the tight spot and let it vibrate the knot away. Works every time. My dh gets these a lot, I am going to tell him about uping his fluid and magnesium, potasium and calcium intake.

I sometimes get cramps due to a condition I suffer from called "Plantar Faciitis".. I wear orthothics, night split (sometimes when needed), to help!
