Question Lexapro

My doctor prescribed me Lexapro. Who here has taken it/is taking it? And what kind of results have you had? I want the good and the bad so I can know what to expect.

Thanks!

=)

I'm on the generic form of Lexapro right now.....20mgs. It has helped but I've noticed I'm depressed on it. It's really helped me with anxiety but the depression is not any better. I've been on it for about 5 weeks now. I really think I just need a higher dosage.

I was on Lexapro (not the generic) about 2 years ago. It worked GREAT! I've heard the generic is a little weaker then the real stuff. So that's why I'm thinking I just need a higher dose. I will be going back for a follow-up at the end of the month.

It's wonderful that you got what you need to help you! So many people would never even think of going on anything to help them. But I feel that if it's there then use it

Keep us posted!

I used to take Lexapro. It was pretty good. It didn't really work like it was supposed to because I needed more than just an antidepressant.

I just started today, 10 mg of Lexapro for mild depression. So I'll keep everyone updated on how it goes. I'm a little concerned about gaining weight on it because I try really hard to maintain and it's hard enough with PCOS to do that.

Have either of you experienced any weight gain?

I was on 20mg of Lexapro before I conceived my son in 2005. I went off of it mid-way into the pregnancy, then went back on it when my son was 11 months old. My anxiety attacks returned, worse than ever. I have been on it again for a year, but this time, I only take 10mg a day, and I have to split the pill in two because it was given me "episodes" of nervous tension. I went to the ER because I thought I was dying. It was awful. I am able to tolerate the 10mg now. I can't take anything else because the Lexapro is one of two drugs that is approved for women TTC. But it is keeping the anxiety under control.
I hope it works for you, but if it doesn't, you have a lot of options. Trust your instincts.

I've been taking lexapro 10 mg for about 3 months now. For the most part I really like it. I don't feel like a zombie like I have with other AD's in the past. On this low dose of lexapro I feel like myself-- only without the major major mood swings. My depression is much better and I haven't gained any weight. The only things I have noticed that I don't like are that my libido has gone missing and I am having a harder time motivating myself to work out. I used to run everyday to let off steam, but now with the lexapro I don't get all edgy feeling and so I don't feel as compelled to workout, if that makes any sense?

Let us know how it goes for you! Good luck. : )

I was on Lexapro for a VERY short time last year. It did to me what it was supposed to prevent. I had what they called an
"Acute Psychotic Reaction" to it. After taking it for about 3 days, I had racing thoughts, heard voices and wanted to kill myself, (even though I still knew that wasn't a rational thought .. if that makes sense.) I ended up in the hospital until it was out of my system and my mind was clear enough again to make decisions. It really messed me up. I know that they say this is a very rare occurence, but beware that this happens sometimes! I had been on Effexor XR before and it had done ok, just felt it stopped working after about a year. Good luck on the Lexapro. My mom takes it and has never had any problems with it at all..

Marsha, how did you get off of Effexor? I was put on it for anxiety after a loved one died, and now I am trying to wean myself off of it. I open the pills and pour out a little bit more each day. I tried going cold turkey and had such horrid withdrawal symptoms that I feel there is just no way I can go off of them abruptly. What was your experience?

effexor is one of the worst for withdrawal symptoms b/c of it's short half-life. here's some information on how to get off it: http://www.crazymeds.us/discontinue.htm

I started taking it about 3 years ago - I LOVED it. It was like a night-and-day difference for me, and I didn't have any side effects from it.

Due to my crappy insurance, I'm on generic Celexa now instead of Lexapro (it's a slightly different formulation), and it still works pretty well, although the dosages are different.

Good luck!

I've been on Cipralex (different country, different name, same drug) since March, and it's changed my life. Seriously. It's helped my social and generalised anxiety so much I can't even express it. It helps the depression as well, of course, but part of my problem was that I was afraid to talk to people and worried about everything, so once that went away *and* with the meds working on the depression? Wow.

As far as side effects, the things that normally hit me are tremors and nausea, and drowsiness. I started taking it at night to help me over the nausea, which worked. But I didn't realise until now that my sleepiness in the morning (ie, until noon) was due to the medication before bed. I started taking it in the afternoon around 3 or 4, and the morning sleepies were instantly gone. I didn't have any tremors with this one, but now that I'm not sleeping through the early effects, I'm noticing a little bit of nausea about two hours after taking it. Not horrendous, and it goes away after about fifteen minutes. I did have horrendous nausea the first three or four weeks I took it, but that's normal. Once my body adjusted to the medication, it receded.

All in all, this works for me and I love it.

I was on it before ttc and I loved it!! I took 10 mgs for anxiety and mild depression. I had virtually no side effects while taking it and am planning to go back on it as soon as I deliver. I can't wait!
