hi all..I'm new here and feeling extremely blue. I was wondering if
anyone has tried lexipro? Had a drug rep tell me about it and of course from what she said it sounds wonderful. It's very low dose from what I understand and doesn't have a lot of the normal side effects.
I've got to find something that works...It's getting to where I don't want to leave the house...because it takes to much effort to become "presentable" what with shaving and plucking and just having to drag my depressed butt up out of the bed. I have been in my pjs for the last day and a half and have only left my room to wander to the kitchen to get carb laden foods to find somesort of comfort...and I only feel worse then.
I'm making an appoint with the gyno this week..hopefully to get a diagnosis finally. I had given up on finding a dr that would tell me what I know is wrong with me...this one diagnosed my sister about a month ago. So I'm hopeful to finally be told I have PCOS...I know it sounds strange but I feel with that I'd have some hope of getting on the right track to start fixing what's wrong with me.
Anyway..thanks for listening.... I've been browsing the board for a little while and you all seem so nice and caring...and know how I feel...I was afraid I was the only one out there.
I take Lexapro, and to be perfectly frank here's my experiences:
Pros: does a great job with my anxiety disorder (I litterally couldn't leave the house), and my seasonal affective disorder.
Cons: some sex drive problems (may be PCOS or BCP related), insomnia.

I have been on Lexapro before. I have a stomach condition that was prexisting to all of the psychiatric drugs so I'm not sure if it was the meds or just me. But when I was on Lexapro, I had severe stomach aches and nausea. I mean, doubled over stomach aches!! But , coudl just be me. Also, the told me the low dose thing too but what they didn't tell me was that even with a low dose it is still a powerful medicine. I was on 5mgs. or 1 month and then they doubled it to 10mgs. I had halucinations on 10mgs. But, I don't tolerate meds very well at all. I must be the side effect queen, because they always get me. I hope your experience is better.
Good luck and HUGS!

Bethann that was one of the questions I asked this girl straight out..because I have been on Paxil before and it killed the drive. But I guess with drug reps..they'll tell you anything to get you to try it lol I haven't had any problems in that area due to the PCOS so I'm hoping lexapro wont cause any either...my boyfriend has been overseas for months and will be coming home in Nov he says he'll kill me if I lose the drive!!! Insomnia shouldn't be a problem as I sleep or lay in bed all day long...I need something to get me out of the bed and off into the world...
Tanya...oh my gosh..hallucenations on 10mg?? That is some powerful stuff!!! Usually I'm not very sensitive to medications or suffer side effects...so I'm hoping that Lexapro will be the answer to a few of my prayers..
I've been on Lexapro myself, and while it seems to help to some extent, I'm not a huge fan of it. Basically, I get issues with motor control (somewhat like a major case of restless legs syndrome, although it affects my arms sometimes too) and can't do much besides bang my limbs against something when on any dose above 10 mg. I looked for research on this, and I can't seem to find anything about this side effect, but there's no way I could work through it -- driving a car wouldn't even work! (Blast that Lexapro, had to eat quite a bit of vacation time at work to make it through it...) I am on 10 mg now and it is okay, but I'm talking to the doctor about it next visit.
If it works for you, however, more power to you. And as always, consult your physician.
Truthfully..I'm worried about starting something..although I know I desperately need something. I have a sedentary but stressful job ( I dispatch police/fire/ems and answer 911 calls) I don't need something that will make me lose my snap. I guess I can try it and if after a month or so I'm feeling horrible I'll try something new...it's just my sanity...guess I can play with that a little bit NOT
Sometimes I wonder what I ever did in my previous lives to be dealt the one I have now. I musta been a bad bad person.
Thanks for all the input...I will definitely have more questions to ask the Dr about when I go!!!
I had the same problem with leaving the house. I have fibromyalgia (a pain syndrome) as well as PCOS, and it was just too painful and too tiring to go outside. (This was about a year ago). At the time I was taking 10mg of Lexapro. My doc said that it's not uncommon for people with chronic illnesses to develop a fear of going outdoors now and then, it's part of the depression that goes with the illnesses sometimes. She said that 10mg is actually a fairly low dose, and upped me to 20mg a day at bedtime. It's worked well for me since then. I haven't had any side effects that I've noticed. I can't speak to sexual side effects since I'm a virgin, but maybe others will know.
Hope this helps, and hope everything goes well for you. PM me if you have any questions!

Got my 2 week starter sample from the Dr on 10/14. It's 10 mg a day for the first two weeks and he gave me an Rx for 20 mg a day after that. I am on day 3 and no side effects to speak of as of yet. I get a little queasy about 30 min after I take it...but it's nothing unbearable. I'm really hopeful and can't wait for it to really kick in. I'll keep y'all posted!!
Thanks for the replies too!! It always helps to have more info...things that I should be on the look out for when on new meds
Try eating something when you take it to see if it helps the queasiness. Even if it's just a few saltine crackers, or maybe a slice of a turkey cold cut...just to have something on your stomach. That helps me.
Good luck, and keep us updated!

I take Lexapro. I just started it about 2 months ago, so far so good. I've been on Prozac, which caused stomach problems and then stopped working for me. I've also been on Effexor, which had a gazillion side effects. It gave me headaches, stomach problems, sleeping problems, ect.... I was on it for 5 years, I feel so much better on Lexapro. But, I am going to ask the Dr. to up it, because I'm having sucidial thoughts and that's not good for me!
I was Lexapro for awhile, the only reason I stopped taking it is because the drug company stopped giving free samples to my school. Someone mentioned "restless leg syndrome" and I guess I had the same thing. If I was sitting watching tv or something, my leg would start bouncing, like a kid who had too much sugar. That was the worst side effect and it didn't bother me much. I'd probably still be on it but I don't have health insurance and can't really afford to pay for all these meds.
