I am currently seeking an individual life insurance policy. I have an appt w/ a guy to come out next Tues night to discuss the different plans available. When he asked the preliminary questions, I told him about my PCOS diagnosis. He said that he never heard of it and doesn't think it will make a difference.
I am just curious to know if any of you have had problems with getting life insurance with PCOS and/or Met, or very high prices, etc.
Thanks.

Yes. You won't be eligible for the best rates, but you may be able to find a company that will insure you. At the insurance company where I used to work, it was an automatic denial (they view it the same as diabetes).
Here's my thought on the subject - can you lie? Depending on how much insurance you're applying for, they may not require copies of your medical records, and blood work only checks for the basics. Depending on the company and/or amount, though, they may require medical records. And, if your symptoms/hormones have been under control for awhile, they're more likely to approve. If you're on Metformin, though, it raises a HUGE red flag.
I hope you're able to get a decent rate!

I spoke to the man about it again today. Good news! He works with an underwriter who specializes in customers with health conditions. They will have me sign a release form so they can pull my medical records. As long as my kidneys have not been effected, they will give me a standard rate (it won't be elevated due to health conditions). My kidneys have not been effected, and my medical records will show it. He said that he works with clients all of the time with health conditions, many with much more serious conditions, and gets them approved. He's been in the business for over 30 yrs. He said the only problem that they WOULD HAVE encountered was if I had not had all of the testing done. Then, they would not have covered me UNTIL I had all of the testing done. He said that since I have had all of the tests, am being treated and monitored by a physician, there is no problem! I told him that I heard about this PCOS/ineligable situation from message board...he said that if I know of anyone who needs help in getting insurance, he can help them. I'm looking at $250k & $500k policies. I'll let you know what rates I get.

PCOS shouldn't affect whether you can get insurance or not.
BUT....Health conditions RELATED to PCOS can.
If you have a history of heart disease, high cholesteral, triglicerites, high blood presure, stoke or heart attack, these factors are what he will be looking for.
Is there a way to avoid sharing your total medical record? Or do you have to disclose everything you have ever been treated for(even yeast infections)?
Find out if he has a questionair with specific issues he would look for.
Then only release those. I have things in my record that I would not think would pertain to getting insurance and I sure don't need just anyone knowing about it.(I was a rape victim)
I guess I am leary of anyone who wants too much info.
Good Luck,
Patty
BTW>>>They can "file" any information you give them. So if they pulled up you had a STD 10 years ago, that will be forever in your "file". FYI

You're lucky you can get covered. When I was a student and could no longer be covered by my parents, I tried to get coverage and they denied me based on PCOS alone. They said it's not the PCOS they're worried about, it's the infertility treatment, and since that's a potential problem, they wouldn't take me on. I had to deal with student health coverage (which is basically nothing except cheap meds) for a few years until I married and got onto my hubbie's plan. Best of luck!

mj_romo.... i think she is refering to Life Insurance not Health Insurance..
i got a policy last year for $180000... i did not tell them about PCOS becuase i didn't know.... my gyno who dx me set my family doc a letter stating her dx and my family doc never told me!! even when i start to ttc!!!! a whole year went by before i found out.... so i hope this does not effect my policy,,, i have no other health problems and no symptoms of PCOS... i am currently being tested for diabeties etc...
NOW i have a question,,, if i do have diabeties or get other health problems,, is that ok because they started after the policy was set up?
Mya - it won't become an issue until you are up for renewal. I got my life insurance policy when I was 20 and don't have to reapply for 10 years. My physical came up squeaky clean then. So we'll see how I do in 2 years...

Great news!!! I met with the financial advisor tonight and it went fantastic! He does not just work with insurance, but also does a whole financial plan tailored to your needs. Anyway, as far as the insurance: $225,000 convertible 20-yr life insurance will cost me $25.00 per month. But, based on my needs, I actually need $300,000 policy, so he will get me a new rate. He is going to make it somehow that once I get locked in, I will never have to answer any medical questions again, or physical for renewal. I forgot what he called it. Talking to this guy was like talking to Suze Orman! I'm am just so thrilled right now (can you tell? lol). Anyway, he has been in the business for over 30-yrs and he is responsible not just for PA, but for 12 other states as well. He travels all of the time. If anyone is interested in a no-obligation introduction, please let me know.

I've got a $100,000 policy, and when we went in, I told them everything upfront, and I actually insisted on the tests (their policy is to only do it for $500,000 or above). I do have slightly elivated cholesterol levels, but I have low BP and am fairly healthy even though I am very obese. I was approved without a problem, and they will give me more if I want it. I can't think of how much I pay a month though.

You are lucky, I was denied due to my weight and I don't consider myself exteremly overweight either. I'm interested in your insurer if you get in.
Thanks,
Lana

I am 5'1 and 195lb! My cholesterol is slightly elevated. I'm also pre-diabetic. He was able to get me in at a standard rate. He works with a lot of underwriters, many which deal with people with health conditions. He works with them until he finds the best deal for his client. He said that since he's been in the business so long and has made many contacts, he does have some "pull" with getting the best deal for his clients. Please let me know if you'd like his contact info. I'm sure Ohio is one of the states he covers, as well.
