Lightbulb moment -- this is why I felt awful on Met!!
After taking Met for three weeks and feeling as if all of PCOS symptoms were getting worse, I did a little investigating. Turns out that Met increases the DHEA-sulfate level in the blood -- which acts just like estrogen in the body!!!
I had all the classic symptoms that I used to get when was on the pill -- headache, exhaustion, extreme bloating, neck acne, hair falling out, body hair worse, facial hair worse, gained 5 pounds, terrible TMJ. I also did not experience any of the intestinal problems that many of you ladies have experienced, which leads me to believe that it was not the right drug for me.
I know my body fairly well from trying every herbal and prescription out there -- and one thing I do know is that I can't tolerate anything that has an estrogenic effect. My body gets worse, not better -- now I know there was a reason for the misery!!
I called my doc and he said to stop taking Met. So I have switched to the real Gluc for now. I've been on it for one day at only 500mg, so time will tell. He said to only give it a few weeks and if I am miserable again to stop it.
Has anyone made switch and felt better?

i am on met and it's worked for me so far, but you're a good example that it's not the right medication for every woman. It's good to know your body and when something isn't working for you, it's up to you to change it. I hope the gluc works out for you. I think that there is something for every cyster out there and sometimes it just takes finding the right med or combination of meds.
Best wishes!

I just wanted to add this... I finally got a doc to believe me that I had PCOS... got to see an endo doc in July and she put me on met... that was a friday... by sunday I was having horrible side pains... and after 2 weeks I quit taking it... because the pain was just too much... so after seeing a GI doc, and MRI, Ultrasound, CAT scan and 4 visit to the vamps (aka bloodwork at a lab) the GI doc told me that it looks like it was the meds and to stop taking them... (everything came back fine) that was in Sept... but the endo doc said that it couldn't be the meds... and I was only taking 500mg and was feeling sick all the time, couldn't be touched because of the pain, and spent 90% of my time in the bathroom and couldn't sleep because of the pain...
The endo doc didn't even think about trying something else... so now I have to go back and see her again and try something else... so Met isn't the answer for everyone...
I was the complete opposite of you...I was on Glu (the real stuff as some put it) and I was miserable, bloated, extreme side effects, you name it I felt it. Switched over to the Metformin because I had to due to my insurance, and guess what?!?! I have never felt so much better!!! So like someone has said over and over it effects us ALL differently, I will never knock generic brand again. And turst me before I waste another year of my life feeling like crap I am going to explore first! Glad you found something that worked for you!!! Good luck!

Well, after nearly a week on the Gluc I am experiencing all of the incredibly awful side effects. I'm shelving it for now. I must be one of the few that this is not a miracle drug for -- it is just misery. Hope everyone else has a better experience than I did -- one night last week I literally thought I was going to die, so my doc said absolutely to not take it anymore -- well, duh.

Hey Lori,
Sorry that the gluc didn't work out either, hopefully you will find something that works for your body, I understand not having met be a miracle drug, since every time I take it I gain weight like crazy. I was wondering if you have a link or something for where you found that DHEA-Sulfate acts like estrogen in the body, i'm wondering if that was what was wrong with me also. Thanks for any help in advance!

I found out it about just by reading the sticky at the top of this forum -- Summary of Interactions, etc. I clicked on the link there and read that it increases DHEA-sulfates blood levels.
My DHEA is already high, so I'm assuming this is why I was miserable and gained so much weight in so little time. Estrogens really affect how I feel for some reason -- I felt like a totally different person.

I started Met almost 2 months ago. At first i was completely miserable. Same as most of you i felt (to put it bluntly)like CRAP!!! I was bloated, crampy, and going to the bathroom a million times a day. But after a month or so the S/E started to go away. Now i feel fine, actually less bloated than i felt before i started the met, no cramps at all. For the first few weeks on met i would get these tinges in my lower abdomen, where my ovaries are, i didnt know what it was, it kind of felt like it did 500 years ago when i used to O. I also got those pains before i started the met. Those are gone too. My only thing now is that i am sooooo tired. LIke i could sleep all day long if i was able to. Is anyone else experiencing that. I dont think that the sleepiness is all from the met though, i started being that way long ago with my first DX but now it seems worse.
No met is not for everyone, and i am not even sure if its for me. I have not had any changes in my body, such as getting AF or Oing. None of the things that i want to happen. I am however losing less hair and feel like i may have dropped a few pounds. But that is not why i started met. My Endo says to try it for 3 months, and if nothing happens they will put me on met/clomid combo.
Well good luck to everyone...
