Like everyone else, newly diagnosed and need some advice!
Hey Ladies – I have been lurking here for about a month or so, and finding this site and reading your posts and learning about PCOS has already had a huge effect on my life. Sometimes all you need to know is that you are not alone, and it makes all the difference. After having a serious fear of doctors for 15 years or so, I began the arduous process of beginning to seek diagnosis and treatment for my problems. Earlier this week I had my first appointment with Dr. Redmond in Manhattan, and was officially diagnosed with mild insulin resistance and PCOS.
If any of you ladies can share with me what I can expect as I start down this road, I would really appreciate it. He wants me to take a few more test before he starts me on a regimen of Met and Spiro. What can I expect? Will my symptoms subside? What is life like after a diagnosis? Do you have to be on medication forever? Does this disease ever get itself in check and symptoms get better? How long might I have to wait before I see some improvement? Can I have successful laser hair removal if I get my hormones in check? What can I do to help myself have the most success in getting this thing in check?
I realize that this is my first post but already I want to say thank you to all of you. You’ve made such a huge difference in my life already (just by lurking on this site) and I expect I’ll be coming back here for more support as I continue this journey! - Meta888
hi
welcome to sc. I have been on spiro about 6 years now. It did mess my periods up for a month or two, but they settled down to my normal. My endo said that it takes 9-12 months to get to maximum result. Been on met about 5 years, i really like it as it helps me with my weight

Everybody's PCOS experience is different. What kind of improvement, and how long it takes dependd on the symptom, the type of treatment, anddepends on how well your body responds to treatment.
Do you have to take meds forever?
I don't take meds any more.
I have found alternative treatments that have given me great results. My cycles changed right away, within 28 days, when I was TTC, it took about 3-4 months, but is has taken a while to lose weight (I had over 100 lbs to lose). I still have a few thick hairs on my chin, but I hope that is something that will improve now that my hormones are back to normal. The last time I had my cholesterol checked (last year), is was still a bit high, but much better that it was before I started treatment.
Suggestions to help you have the most success getting it in check?
The more do, to treat your PCOS, the better your chances of improvement of your symptoms.
I would suggest that you eat a diet that is low in simple carbs, especially avoid sweets, drinks and foods with high fructose corn syprup, and refined grain products like white bread, or white rice.
Regular exercise will also help with IR/PCOS, because during exercise, the blood glucose can enter the cells without needing insulin.
You could also look into alternatives, and add some of those to your treatment program.
I hope that you have great success in the Tx of your PCOS, and that you can start seeing improvement in your symptoms right away.

Reason: spelling
:Hugs: I know it's overwhelming when you are first diagnosed, remember that we're here for you. I have a fear of doctors too so I know where you're coming from! I am blessed with a wonderful doc now and that helps so much, so I'm glad you went to see this new doc and I hope you get really good care. You deserve it!
Hugs
Jenny

You know - it's kind of difficult to explain this thing to people who have never heard of it. I'm having a hell of a hard time trying to tell family & friends what is wrong with me - without getting them worried and without making a big deal about it.
The fun part is trying to explain to people that there actually is a medical reason why I've never been able to lose weight like normal people, even though I eat better than most of the people I know!
Tomorrow morning I have a Glucose Tolerance Test and they are going to take more blood (human pincushion anyone?)
Can anybody tell me what that test is all about? I know it takes 3 hours and I have to drink something, which hasn't been described as actually pleasant. Sounds like an extremely annoying way to start a morning!
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!
So so so so so so so glad I found this place! It's so important.
Yes, it is kind of nice to have a medical reason why you just can't seem to lose weight. It will also be nice, once you start treatment, to be able to start losing weight.
I took a glucose tolerance test while I was PG. I drank a lemon-lime carbonated drink. Then you have to wait a certain amount of time to pass, and then they take your blood to see what your glucose level is.
I asked if I could pick up the drink a few days before the test, so I could drink it at home, and then go into to the lab at the right time, so I wouldn't have to wait around for 3 hours to have my blood drawn.
Since you are having it done this AM, you are probably already at the lab. Hope it went well.

I also am IR and PCOS. For my weight I have found a great relief from "The Insulin resistance" plan. The book is wonderful and helped me to understand exatly what happens inside my body when i eat. Exercise has helped a lot with fatigue, which i have experienced for years. I also take certain vitamins and my meds.
The bad thing about this syndrome is that there is no one answer. For each of us the outcomes are different. The most important advice i can give you, is to stress how important it is to have a good dr, one that you feel comfortable with and one that you trust.
Also remember, this syndrome can be aggrevating? to say the least. When i feel that way, I get on here and either read some posts or jump into the chatroom, before I'm done, I feel tons better. This site is wonderful and filled with amazing women. if you ever need to talk, I'm here, feel free to PM me.
If you ever need anything just feel free to PM me!

What can I expect? Blood tests will show alot and maybe a Glucose test
Will my symptoms subside? Some will, depends on what you do and how you change your lifestyle (diet, exercise, meds)
What is life like after a diagnosis? Much better...now there is a name for the symptoms
Do you have to be on medication forever? I took met for three years and injections for twins, have stopped met since delivery.
Does this disease ever get itself in check and symptoms get better? There is no cure, but symptoms are manageable with meds, diet, etc.
How long might I have to wait before I see some improvement? Varies, gove it at least 6 months to see major changes, nothing overnight.
Can I have successful laser hair removal if I get my hormones in check? Not sure on this one. I shave my chin daily.
What can I do to help myself have the most success in getting this thing in check? Research,a sk questions, self educate, don't take everything Drs say at face value.
