I have always had excellent teeth, no cavities or any other problems. Last summer I developed an absess and had to have antibiotics and then a root canal and crown placed. I also had the beginnings of peridontal disease. My dentist and hygenist both said that hormonal imbalance or going through menopause or having IR or diabetes can really mess with your teeth and gums. Luckily my peridontal disease was caught early because I visit the dentist yearly and have my teeth cleaned regulary. So, my treatment is easy. But if you have more advanced peridontal disease the treatment can be very difficult, I've heard.
Unfortanetly mine is very advanced and I am going through all the procedures right now...PAINFUL!!! It was my sister who told me about it along with PCOS actually...I have just had my appt with my Dr and have only done a few blood tests so far. I haven't mentioned PCOS to him yet I'm too nervous but with all the symptoms I am having the signs show PCOS and my sister is the one who has been pushing me to go through with all this.
But thanks for replying I just wanted to see if anyone else has heard of the two being linked
Interesting question. I hadn't heard anything about a link, but I wouldn't be surprised. My dad had periodontal disease, and when I went to get my teeth whitened a few years ago, I had the beginning stages of PD that had to be treated before they would do the whitening. (and I brush regularly AND use Listerine like crazy.)
Did you check PubMed?

Interesting. I don't have PCOS, but am IR (well controlled thanks to diet & exercise). On visiting the dentist last month, I was told that I need to see a periodontist as I have pretty major recession in one area. I go in June to be evaluated for a gum graft which sounds expensive and painful. They say it's because I brush too hard, but now I'm wondering if I was more susceptable due to other factors. . .

Hmm, interesting. I was only diagnosed PCOS 2 months ago. But this could explain why I've always had horrible teeth and gums no matter how diligent I am at brushing a flossing. I will have to mention it to the dentist on my next visit to see what he has to say about it.
