The diet is an 8 week eating plan to detoxify your liver. It is also a way of eating - fully balanced and healthy, so you can keep on it your whole life (if you can, of course).
It has 12 vital principles to adhere to:
1. Listen to your body - if you're hungry, eat. If you aren't don't (ie don't just live by the clock, go by how you feel)
2. Drink at least 8 - 12 glasses of filtered water/day
3. Avoid eating large amounts of sugar (including artificial sweeteners and refined foods)
4. Don't become obsessed with counting calories
5. Avoid foods that you are allergic to or that upset you
6. Be aware of good intestinal hygeine - eat only fresh foods prepared under hygeinic conditions
7. Do not eat if you feel stressed or anxious
8. Eat organic if possible
9. Obtain your protein from diverse sources (ie legumes, chicken, eggs, fish) - red meat is not allowed on the diet and egg yolks and chicken are only allowed in the first two and the last two weeks. Seafood is allowed all the way through.
10. Choose your breads and spreads wisely - fresh baked bread from a bakery with no preservatives. No white bread. No butter or margarine - used avocado, humous, tahini instead.
11. Avoid constipation - eat lots of raw fruits and vegies, drink plenty of water, eat plenty of wholegrains, take psyllium daily.
12. Avoid excessive saturated or damaged fats - use healthy oils (extra virgin olive, vegetable oils, flax seed oil) - don't damage them with frying (only stirfry in a little amount of water to avoid burning). Flax seed oil can be added to your cereal/porridge etc, but don't heat it with cooking or it'll break down.
There are a lot of recipes and meal ideas in the book. There are a few extra guidelines ie when you wake up drink two glasses of water with citrus in it, then 15mins later drink a glass of freshly juiced carrot, celery and parsley juice (yum!), then have breakfast. With dinner always have a raw salad. There is no dairy during the 8 weeks.
I hired the book from my local library - see if you can get it there. It really is good.
