I have been on Glucophage for a week now and just starting to up my dosage and after reading some posts I hear that some of you guys have had liver tests done. My DR didn't do this before she put my on the med. When should I ask for this test. Should it be part of my yearly exam routine? HELP!

If you are healthy, I don't think they test your liver before you go on Met (they didn't test my liver). Usually you have it checked every 3 - 6 months after you go on Met.

Rapunzel

The doctor is supposed to test your liver enzymes prior to starting Metformin... Since this drug is secreted through the liver, if there are some issues going on there and the enzymes are elevated, the Metformin can cause major health problems, so it is important. My enzymes were slightly elevated, which prevented me from getting on Met for a whole extra year But I am on it now, and all is well! I would suggest asking your doc if you are concerned. Good luck.
