My Mood: Points: 26,345.15 Bank: 155,753.00 Total Points: 182,098.15 | Yesterdays appointment was HORRIBLE! The doctor didn't have much bedside manner, that's for sure but honestly that's the worst of our worries. So he walks in, shakes our hand and says "ok we have 2 problems, you have pcos (points at me) and you had a ZERO sperm count" to my DH. We both are like "what?!?" and he said "oh you didn't know". NO for F sakes we didn't know and what a great f-in way to tell us. Excuse my french but obviously I'm passionate about this issue. So now it's all a waiting game, here is what we have to do: ME: He's still sending me for an HSG and a fresh u/s and b/w but all this has to be on the fresh cycle because I was already on day 7. Oh and if they don't have time to get me in for an HSG- it'll be the NEXT cycle. DH: The dr examined his *** and said that he has some kind of birth defect, almost like he's had a vasectomy on the left side and the right doesn't feel great either. This is a sign of some Y-chromosome thing. So first he has to do another s/c. Then he has to go for a rectal u/s that checks everything down there to find out if he even has any sperm down there. Then we have to pay $400 for some y-chromosome microdeletion test. He had a bunch of blood work done yesterday before we left that will take 5 months for the genetic results. Basically, if he does have sperm we can proceed with IVF and they'll retract the sperm surgically. If he doesn't then we're onto Donor if we choose. I have so many questions! The dr said IVF is our only option now and that it's minimum $10k. But he also sent me home with a donor package that said you do IUI and it's $300 to register in the program and then $300 each time if you have a donor. If you also need to buy the sperm it's $400 more each time. Not that we've even decided that a donor is the way to go... Best case scenario is that DH has no genetic problems and has sperm down there and we pay the $10k. Everything is on hold now for a minimum of 9 weeks while we get these tests done.

I am still waiting, and its been 4 months, they said i wouldnt get them until March. Hence the TTC break. Thanks for the info on donor IUI though, do you have more info?? I need to know how much we should be saving. I really hope your DH doesnt have a problem and that there are some swimmers in there. The fertility waiting game is such a toll on our emotions. The best way to look at things is that at least you are getting the answers you need now before you continued and have disapointing results. I know its hard to see the light now, but in 5months you will feel so much better knowing that there are possibilities and answers. You are even a whole 5 months a head of me from my first RE apt. We were told nothing until i had had 4 m/c in THEIR care. Also, MAKE SURE YOU GET COPIES OF EVERYTHING!!! Sometimes they withhold stuff, thinking that they already told you. Everytime you call or have an apt make sure you ask them if anything has come back yet. You have to take charge. ***BIG SQUISHY HUGS***.

Did you pay the $400 for the Y-test thing? The one that only takes 4 weeks. It's not instead of the 5 month one but they said that if we paid the $400 we could move ahead with things (not quickly by anymeans) Ok here's what I have on donor, wait do you have a fax #? I could fax you the paperwork they gave me.

Maybe if we do coffee soon I can see it.
We had fetal testing done, and the long hard way. We are technically waiting for them to find files from ACH about Chris sister so they can investigate other things. Chris may have a genetic issue and have 2 extra 13chromosomes (which technically should mean that he has pratter willies syndrome, but he obviously doesnt) So, once they find the files, we will be back to the genetic councellor and wait on more testing, chris has to do his Karyotyping again, but they are going to dig deeper when they know what they are looking for. They fetal tissue was sent in Sept after my D&C, and thats what we are waiting for.

My Mood: Points: 26,345.15 Bank: 155,753.00 Total Points: 182,098.15 | Ok I'll give you a quick run-down of what it says in note form. You ask questions on anything that doesn't make sense (which could be lots when I'm the one taking notes haha) Donor: Medical Technique: Done by IUI only. Procedure takes only 30 minus. They'll do 3 months of treatments in a row and then make you take a 2 month break. After 3-6 months, they'll investigate further. It's done by Nurses not doctors unless there is a complication. Sperm Donors: Tested often for all medical problems including HIV. Confidentiality: Both parties do not know who is being used. They do not participate in "arranged" donors. You cannot ask someone you know to donate. Matching: They do their best to match race, height, build, hair colour and so on. Pregnancy rate: 13% Costs: Not covered at all. Waiting list: Varies, doesn't state. If unsuccessful you must call in on the first day of AF to arrange next treatment. Prerequisite: Counselling program must be completed prior to treatment by couple. Prices: Registration fee $300, Sperm prep and IUI procedure $300, Approx cost of semen sample $400-600 not including shipping per cycle. Annual storage of all semen samples $200.00. Plus ovulating predictor kits and any medications that aren't covered by insurance. Basic timeline: Jan1- call on first full flow of AF, Jan 3-7 Clomid, Jan 9-12 start using OPK's and U/S if requested. Jan 13-18 IUI treatment in there somewhere. 18 days later, test if no AF.

So you and your DH have decided to go ahead with a donor IUI?
I wanted to ask you, if it's not too personal. How have you been losing weight? I figure since we can't do anything for 2 months I should see if I can loose a few lbs in the time.

My Mood: Points: 12,106.96 Bank: 48,340.57 Total Points: 60,447.52 | Mel- I started my diet/lifestyle change in Dec 06, and since have lost 95lbs. So yes, I have been losing weight, and quite a bit. I still have 35lbs to go to be "healthy" and get down to a BMI of 27.
About the donor IUI. DH still isnt sure, but we talked about it. He hadnt made the realization that he has the male factor. After lots of tears and a few fights, hes warming up to the idea, but hes still upset that he wont continue his "line", but I told him that if he really wanted a child as bad as he says he does, then he would concider it. So he is. I am just preparing mostly right now, from what I have read and asked from other people, that looks like the route we will be taking (and the conversation from the gen. councellor in Oct). I just needed to prepare...like a boyscout, lol. If our results come back without anything wrong (unlikly after 10m/cs) then we will just keep trying with the clomid. Still waiting on results... .

My Mood: Points: 1,269.16 Bank: 1,932.75 Total Points: 3,201.91 | I called the clinic friday to see what the plan was as far as letting this cycle go on longer or induce AF. The nurse called me back today and said the doctors were having a meeting to set up my cycle protocol for IUI! She's pretty sure I will have to have provera but she's not sure if they will have me do a suppression cycle. I THINK I will be starting injects right away when AF comes! I will be getting all my meds either this week or next. She said I will be on Gonal-F. OMG I am sooooo nervous now!
Sheena-Congrats on the weight loss! My DH is the same way about donor IUI. I think he would come around to it if he knew he absolutely couldn't father a child. I am praying that he comes around. (((hugs)))
Melanie-Sorry about the horrible experience at the clinic! I wonder how some doctors get to be doctors. I had one doctor years ago who told me I was too fat to have a baby! Nice eh? (((hugs)))

Sheena: Your weight loss is fantastic! What method were you using? Or were you just eating sensibly? I really want to loose a bit of weight but right now I feel too depressed to even consider it. Not that I'm sitting around eating or anything, but the idea of the treadmill makes me want to hurl. I wish they had a magic pill to make me loose 20. Don't we all???

I cut fats and sugars out of my diet, and eat sensible, prior to my journey i could pack in 4 or 5 cheese burgers, now you are lucky if i eat one!! (except for yesterday I had 2 bad Sheena bad bad) I am very calorie and fat concious now. Very important to cut down intake and sodium is a big one too. When i look back, it was easy to lose the first 20, but the other 75, I had to work that off. Some day when i have lots of time i will tell you all my secrets (psst its mostly metformin).
Take care

I feel great about having you ladies around, sometimes, it's difficult to explain the frustration that a cyster is undergoing. My family just don't understand. Well, my family doctor doesn't know much about PCOS either. Is there any good specialist in Calgary? Please, please let me know.
I'm single and not planning to have a baby, but I still want to live a happy and healthy life. [sigh] |

I apologize but I'm not aware of a PCOS doctor in Calgary, I was fortunate that my family doctor was aware of the pcos and dx me himself. What are you doing to manage the s/e of PCOS?
Sheena, what was the name of that doctor at the walk in clinic? Maybe Slurpeecool could go there. I remember you previously naming someone that was PCOS savy in the NE or something.
