My gynecologist is pretty certain my symptoms point to PCOS and recommended I find an Endo. Unfortunately, the dr she recommends works in a Menopause clinic (and their receptionist is an idiot) so I need to find someone else recommended. I've already had a warning against Dr. Scumpia.
Is there anyone here in the Austin area who can recommend a doc who is good with PCOS cases?
http://www.texasdiabetes.com/staff.html I see Valerie Espinosa and she is FAB! I do have to warn you that they are extremely busy and my follow-up appointments are about 3 months in between, but if they do lab they get back to me with the results when they come in. Within 10 minutes in my first appointment she suspected my adrenal glands were also producing too much androgens and upon testing she was right! She is very nice and they are pretty prompt with their appointments. They do require that your doctor send a referral. I am VERY happy with Dr. Espinosa and this is who is now managing my PCOS, thyroid and adrenal stuff - no more OBs for that.
Thanks much -- I have another friend (non-PCOS) who uses her and recommends her, so glad to hear a PCOS person does as well. I've just found out that she is indeed on my insurance, so I am calling today to try to get an appt!!
I use her now, and think she is great! She is very straight to the point, but unfortunately is never in the office unless you request for her to see you.
Basically that she was hard to get a diagnosis out of, even though all symptoms pointed to a certain problem. Again, this was not from a friend with PCOS. However, another friend of mine who has been diagnosed with PCOS also sees Scumpia and her main complaint with that dr is that all she ever says is "diet and exercise". Not that those aren't important, but...
At any rate, if a doctor is working for you, why change? I haven't gotten in to see one yet, so I'd rather use one that is highly recommended rather than one that gets mixed reviews.

Yeah, you are very right though. Go with somebody you feel comfortable with. You are right about Dr. Scumpia though she does say diet and exercise and it gets frustrating because you know I work very hard to try to get this weight off and it is just so dang stubborn. Anyways... Good luck and let me know... I could use a change! It took them almost 6 months to finally tell me what was wrong with me. I had to keep asking questions and finally said look what is wrong and what do we need to do. I had to talk to a NP and get the information I needed. The staff at her office are sweet as can be, but unfortunately she isn't there as often as she should be.
Kimberdawn, FWIW, my experience with Dr. Espinosa is that she is very up front and direct - I have not had to pull information out of her. In my case I saw her once, we ran lab and the next visit we discussed the results and she came to her conclusion. We even have a plan, though it is on hold due to my pregnancy. I also have hypothyroidism and she has been VERY on top of my hypothyroidism during my pg. I am having lab drawn every 6 weeks to make sure I am on the correct dose - way more attention then my OB (and he is awesome) would have paid. Dr. Espinosa is also very personable, easy to talk to, etc. They are just super busy.
I guess for me right now it is a comfort thing, because I really enjoy going to the nutritionist at Dr. Scumpias office. Kylie is amazing! I went today and I am down 4 pounds from my last visit. I know it doesn't seem like much, but I am slowly working it off like the rest of you! If I have to recommend anybody to see you from Dr. Scumpias office it would be to see the Nurse Practitioner- Amy, and the Nutritionist-Kylie. Dr. Scumpia not so much because she is not personable whatsoever. Anyways... thanks so much I don't think he accepts my insurance though, but maybe on my new insurance he will be on there.
I went to texas diabetes and HATE it. I loved Dr Espinoza but HATE the office. very rude, I'm talking about office manager was rude. Because I have medicaid for a secodardy ins they wouldn't see me. next appt is April of NEXT YEAR!!!!
I hated Dr Scumpia, never saw her and like someone else said she just said diet and exercise. I went for a yr and saw her 2 times I think.
