Looking for good doctor/specialist in Lexington, KY area
Hey, I am new here, but I am very excited to find a "home". I have had PCOS for about 6 years or so, probably longer, but never knew it. I have bounced around here in Lexington, Kentucky with several doctors and I am still waiting to find the "right one" so to speak. I would really like someone who specializes in PCOS as I would like to seriously try for a child next year (nothing has happened in four years, but I am taking Metformin (sp?) and I just got a period for the first time in 2 years!)

I am in Lexington and haw had PCOS for about 15 years, suspected for about 10, but I have only had conformation for 3 years. Can you tell me exactly what ou are looking for in a "right doctor?" Who have you seen already? I like my ob/gyn a lot, and was getting adequate treatment. I just saw a PCOS specialist/reproductive endocrinologist today, but I went to Florence, KY to do so. For me she was special because 1. she is a specialist and 2. she took plenty of time with me, time seems to be an issue a lot at doctor's offices and also vast knowledge of PCOS is not common.
Hi! I live in Pendleton Co. and used to go to Lexington to see an RE, but now I go to Cincy (which isn't that far for you) to see a wonderful RE. Her name is Jennifer Thie. I have been seeing her for several years and highly recommend her.
Her website is thiemd.com
ETA: Dr. Thie is an RE and GYN, and one of her specialties is PCOS, so she is very up to date.

I tried to post the links for the doctor I saw today, she works with the University of Cincinnati and they have a whole PCOS Wellness Center with nutrionists and excercise programs/facilities. They have several different locations and I opted for Florence since it is a bit closer than Cincy. This site won't let me post them though because I don't have a certain number of posts. Just google ucfertility dot com back slash doctors or try Dr. Mira Aubuchon, that should help you find her.
Dr Charles Glueck at the CIncinnati Jewish Hospital Cholesterol and Metabolic Center has a lot of knowledge about PCOS...The other people I have known go there have had more weight loss success there than I have...but metabolically he says I am "beautiful" and could now get pregnant...which is a BIG change from before...it is about an hour and a half from interstate to Jewish Hospital
and personally, I would avoid the UK endocrine folks...the BIGGEST metldown I ever had, I had been diagnosed with PCOS, and sent to UK endo to confirm diagnosis...MD told me no such thing as pcos...that she would now as she read all available research on endo illnesses, that my hypothalamus was just set to a higer weight than most people's and that I shoudl be happy to weigh X not X+50. Needless to say...not a place I would recommend for PCOS treatmetn

EEK! Do you mind telling me which UK endo that was? You can PM me if you don't want to publicly post it, but I am just curious as I used to see a female endo there.

For my regular OB, I see Jeanne O'Nan in Lexington. For a general OB she is very positive about PCOS. For our RE for TTC, we went to Drs. Scheiber and Awadalla in Cincinnati and were very pleased with their office...but at that point our primary focus was TTC and not just overall PCOS treatment.
Before we moved to KY, I did see an endo for PCOS treatment (not TTC) and I would recommend trying to see a specialist. I have heard that Dr. Glueck in Cincinnati is very knowledgeable about PCOS but doesn't have the best bedside manner.
I also was not impressed with doctors at UK, either their RE's or their endos. Plus the offices were unorganized - they lost paperwork, etc. Unfortunately it seems like the best specialists are found in Cincinnati...Lexington seems more limited.

Fair assessment of Dr. GLueck...He is very knowledgeable...he lets his patients email him directly...He is not warm and fuzzy...he is scientific and matter-of-fact...I do well with that personality...not everyone does....
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1996 when I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting pregnant. Well guess what 10 years later, and about as many doctors later, I finally have my baby, she is 2 now. The doctor that helped me is Dr. Karon. I recommend her for getting pregnant. As for actual help with PCOS, if anyone knows a doctor for that, I am still looking.
