Default Looking for a good PCOS doctor in Portland, OR

Hi everyone! I was diagnoised about 2 years ago with PCOS and have been dealing with a very poor doctor. I'm trying to find a new doctor to sort of start over and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

Thanks!
Molly

I wish I could help you! I actually just got on here to post the same question for the same area! Keep me posted if you find someone, and I'll do the same

Haha, I was hoping someone had responded with a recommendation! Damn. Well, from my experience, there is no PCOS friendly doc in the whole Kaiser system, so we switched and here's hoping?

Default still looking...

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield and haven't found a good doctor. My current doctor is pretty poor. When I told him that I wanted to treat my PCOS, instead of just live with it, he told me my only option was to take birth control pills, even though he knew I was trying to get pregnant! I've had a lot of trouble trying to find a regular OB/GYN who specializes, or even has good treatment success, with PCOS. Seems like all my searches point to fertility clinics, which my insurance won't pay for. Let me know if you come across a good doctor, and I'll make sure to post here if I find one as well.

Good luck!

Hi if you girls are still looking i know its a ways out there but Salud clinic in woodburn oregon has some great doctors my doctor is family practice and she is so very sweet she help me get diagnosed and was treating me. I wanted a baby and she gave me the meds to make it happen. I now have a DS. and pregnant with #2. but any way its a clinic the deal with low income familys too. so you can get help with treatment if u cant afford it.

I haven't gone yet but I have an appt with Dr. Laura Greenberg by St. V's in portland (near beaverton) and I had been seeing Dr. Broms at Meridian Park but just didn't feel he was the right ob/gyn guy for me plus Dr. Greenberg is an RE which is extra important to me as I am a Type 1 diabetic... Dr. Greenberg treats PCOS according to her website and even links to soulcysters from her site:

Good luck!!

I know this was originally a question about Dr's in the Portland area, but I am wondering if there are any support groups in our area?

Julieben- Please let me know how your appointment went or goes with Dr. Greenberg. We're thinking of setting up an appointment with her for infertility and are curious about other experiences with her. Thanks!

I recently contacted Kaiser and asked to have a Dr who is trained and knowledgeable about PCOS. I then got a call from Dr. Sobeck... he's the head of this and that (can't remember) but we spent about 30 minutes talking on the phone and he really knew his stuff! We talked about recent research findings and best course of action... for me I need to loose weight before I TTC and his recommendation for PCOS patients is Atkins. We talked about the spironolactone and he wasn't a huge fan (but I have found it to be very successful). His biggest recommendation was exercise (man I hate that word!) We talked about alternative therapies and he didn't seem to be in favor, but he also didn't poopoo them like many Dr's do. I was suppose to get a call from his office to set up an appointment, but I haven't heard back from him yet. He really heard what I had to say and didn't just brush my concerns away as if I was only concerned about vanity.

There is an excellent Dr in East Vancouver named Laura Jordhen... she is an amazing GP!!! !She isn't Kaiser, which sucks for me right now, but maybe she can help someone else who needs a good Dr and she is on your insurance! She HEARS what you have to say, is empathetic and reallly knows her stuff! I wish I could still see her!

I have found that for the most part, I have to educate the Dr's and take control of my treatment. I bring in a sheet of paper with brief quick notes that are to the point on symptoms and what I want to do to treat it. For the most part I see western medical Dr's as an aid in my health, but I am in control. They are there to order tests and prescriptions that I can't do on my own. There is an illusion of power that we grant to Dr's, but in reality, they are simply a person doing a job... the same as a mechanic or a grocery clerk or a secretary... some are better than others in every profession. Unfortunately our medical system is set up in a express lane fashion and Dr's only have so much time, which I'm sure frustrates them to. You can help them by organizing your thoughts and needs clearly. I get nervous in any medical setting and my brain goes out the window, I finally learned that writing everything down before hand is a huge help... I can just hand them the paper to read and they quickly get what information you have and it can then allow them to focus in on your needs.

Holy cow, I do ramble on sometimes... sorry for a long post!

Shortee-

I really liked Dr. Greenberg, I would recommend her to anyone. Very straightforward, but not one of those "you're too fat" doctors and she is knowledgeable about pcos!

Giggling Frog- we've never had a support group (that I am aware of anyway) but some of us have gotten together in a group to meetup a time or two.

What exactly did you go to her for? (obviously PCOS, but what symptoms, etc)...

We're going to her for not only my PCOS, but also fertility... We made an appointment for next Wednesday... How long was your appointment?
