Lightbulb looking for metformin info

Hi- I just got started on the metformin a few days ago, and I was hoping there were some people who could share their experiences with it, good and bad. Preferrably the good. lol. I am insulin resistant and VERY overweight (to put it nicely) I am going to try and watch how many sugars I eat. Has the metformin helped anyone with weight loss???

Hi...

I have been on Metformin for a little over a month. I exersice on a regular basis and watch what I eat (look into the book titled, The Insulin Resistant Diet:How to turn off Your Body's Fat Making Machine.) I am down 10 lbs since starting (I have not updated my ticker). So far my experience with the medicine is positive. I have just started on 1000mg for my second month, for the first month I was on 500mg. I get the usual side effects just for the first week I change the dosage.

Good luck and hope this helps you.

Hiya shortandbubbly!!

I have been on Metformin for 2 and half years and I am very happy with the results!

To begin with, the first 3 months were agony with nausea every morning and and upset stomach. I kept thinking "is it all worth it?" I stuck with it and I have lost 4 stone (I think thats about 56 pounds??) Of course I changed my diet COMPLETELY and added alot more exercise. At least half an hour everyday - but it was so worth it. I could stand to loose about another stone I think but right now Im happy ive gotten this far.

Metformin helped the most though, its the only medication ive stuck with after changing with different contraception pills and hormone pills.

The only problem I had was that because of the sickness feeling I had my doasge upped so I took twice a day instead of three times a day (Im on 850mg)

Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies. It's always good to hear positive things from other people that are doing the same things that you are starting. That is awesome, 56 lbs! I know that I can't rely on it to happen by medicine alone. I started my different eating style yesterday, and I am a member of Curves. So, this should reall yhelp. I am hoping so, because I have always had such a hard time with weight. I never could imagine that I would lose the weight. I hope this is the beginning of something beautiful. lol.

You can do it! Small steps at a time, take each day as it comes. Because us PCOS gals know that one day you feel great the next you feel shabby, dont degrade yourself for things not happening fast enough either. Every person is different.

Well done for taking the steps you have so far, thats great! Youre on the right track

*big hugz*

Take care shortandbubbly

Thanks for the encouragement syxx! You are right though. today, I feel great, and tomorrow, I may feel completely different. Especially if you suffer from depression like I do. But yes, small steps at a time is what we have to do. If I think way far ahead, than it seems impossible. So, I can think, 'okay, i would like to lose 5 lbs. this month.' And once I lose that, I can focus on another goal. Where did you n otice your weight loss first? My face always loses it the first, than my butt, than my belly and thighs last. I hear that watching your sugars and white flours helps lose the fat around the middle and that would be a blessing for me!

I will watch this thread, I need to start metformin again. I never stick with it due to the side effects. I need to learn to live with it and lose this weight.

The first time I tried it, I only took it for a few days, because I didn't want to deal with the side affects. The good part is it only lasts for a couple weeks usually. Mine were I had diarrhea the first day, and then the second day my stomach felt gross. This time, I had loose bowels the first day, crampy the next day, and nothing after that. If it helps, I think its definitely worth it.

Thats alot similar to the symptoms I had. I had to take about 2 weeks off University because of it, but believe me everyone - it IS worth it!! I would have never been able to keep my weight off without it, I know that I would go right back up to the weight I was before

Good luck you guys!
