Hi! This story will sound familiar to a lot of you - my family dr. doesn't believe I have PCOS as i had no problems getting pregnant, this despite hair growth, etc. The OB she finally sent me to for weird breakthrough bleeding says that all my hormone levels come back as "typical" PCOS profile. I "passed" the OGTT they gave me, although the dr. wouldn't say if I was borderline area or not, simply that I was not diabetic. When I asked him about meds to help me, he said BCP. I don't do well on these, and do not want to use them. I 'persuaded' him to refer me to a dietician, but he isn't sure that they will even see me, as I am not diabetic. ARRGGHH!!! He also told me, basically, that I am not fat enough for him to prescribe anything for me. DOUBLE ARRGGHH!! Why won't they help me to stay/get healthy????Why must I wait until things are really bad before they take me seriously???? Does anyone have a suggestion on where to go from here, and if there are any PCOS friendly drs here in the K/W area??

I am also from KW and have found it to be seriously lacking in Doctors. I have a Family Doctor who is at least able to diagnos PCOS and will refer you to an endo. He can be a little arrogant at times but knows his stuff. The name of my Doctor is Dr. Conte his office is located on highland road in kit. I do not know if he is accepting patients but you can call him at 519-747-2172 to check. I am seeing an endo Dr. Hussein. Although I have only seen her once for testing so far, I have found the wait to be less than 1 month and I have already gotten a dietician. My gyno Dr. Halmo refered me to an endo after royally screwing up my system with Depo then finally admitting he knows nothing about PCOS
I hope this info helps......Good Luck
Thanks
I know what you're talking about. I came off BC about 6 months ago and now my symptoms are worse than before.
I'll give your Dr. a call. It's better than waiting.
Thanks again.
Wow! You mean that you have someone who is willing to work with you? I plan to get my family doc to see if I can get a referral to Dr. Hussein as well. Did the dietician prove to be a help? Dr. Potts(gyn) referred me to the Grand River Hospital outpatient dietician service, but all they were willing to offer was a one time group session where a size 2 dietician, who I swear couldn't have been more than 25 y.o., would tell me about portion control and the Canada's food guide. What a useless topic!!! As if I haven't been using portion control for years and getting nowhere!!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting, Poonis. I have hope again.

I have had PCOS for 7 years now.
I was on all the meds which made me violently ill. I joined Weight watchers and excercised and took my meds. Took me a year to lose 80lbs
I went off the meds and now I have gained it all back.
I am going to visit Dr. Hussein on Nov 05, 2009 for my first visit.
My GP is Dr. Lim in Cambridge (Health Link clinic on Conestoga Blvd)and she is wonderful.
I met her in the summer when I had my initial visit to change doctors as I live in Cambridge and my doctor is not in this city.
She took one look at me and said "you have PCOS". I talked with her about living on salad and still gaining weight. She said "honey...you can eat air and gain weight."
That is when I burst into tears.
Needless to say she got my blood work done and got me an appt with Dr, Hussein.
I would recommend Dr. Lim as a GP and I will let you know about Dr. Hussein.
KW is desperatly in need of doctors. I kept my GP in my hometown for a long time after moving here since there was nobody taking patients. I was able to get in to a clinic in Cambridge. Forbes Medical Clinic with Dr. Maria Matsuda. I have only been there once in 6 months to meet her, but she seems very good.
I use Dr. Tsandalis as an OBGYN and he is great! He is in the office next to Dr. Hussein who I saw about 5 times in the last year. She was great to go to and I highly recommend her as an endo if you need one. I didn't have to wait and she always ran on time. Dr Tsandalis seems to deal with PCOS, having run lots of tests for me and next will be looking at other options. I recommend him.
I did put our name in a clinic near the downtown...can't remember the name but it is an old school, red building (if I remember correctly) near Victoria Park. I was on a waiting list and they called about 3 weeks ago to see if I still needed a GP. I passed since we got one, but I was on the waiting list for about 8 months. Might be worth looking in to.
Hope your able to get some help in finding a new doctor.
Jury is still out on Dr. Husein. Found her to be arrogant. She cuts you off and does not give you a chance to discuss symptoms or anything else for that matter. She DID have lots of good advice though. Personally we believe PCOS is emotional as well as physical and she needs to listen to how a person is feeling BOTH medically and emotionally. Will update after next visit to see if things improve with her bedside manner. Cheers

I'm sorry to hear that. That was not my experience. I had another endo in London area and I found Dr. Husein much easier to deal with then my previous endo.
Thanks CupofChai. I sincerely hope her attitude was simply "a bad day" !!
Will keep an open mind as usual and fingers crossed for a better visit next time
I am glad to hear you had a better experience though!
CupofChai - I'm happy to hear good things about Dr. Tsandalis since I actually just received a referral to him earlier today since I'm looking to change doctors and get a 2nd opinion regarding treatment options. My current doctor is Dr. Campanaro at the KARMA clinic and I found her to be not to be a very PCOS friendly doctor despite the fact that she's supposed to be a "fertility specialist".
Out of curiousity, how did you go about finding a GP? My husband and I are in need of a family doctor, and I don't even know where to start so we can find one who is accepting new patients.
