Default looking for some advice

Hey all, I want to start off by saying how helpful this forum has been for me in putting together the pieces of PCOS. I am a 20 year old female who exercises regularly and eats well. I would consider myself more healthy than most people my age. Just over 2 years ago, I started having sharp pains/burning pains when having sex with my boyfriend. I got it checked out, and my dr said it was a yeast infection. However, I never had any other telltale signs of a yeast infection. For 2 years, this problem has never been solved. Ive been to countless doctors who examine me and all say its yeast, but no creams/medicines/supplements seem to make it go away. I have had about 7-8 full-blown yeast infections, but they can usually be cured with a 3-5 day course of OTC treatment. (and by "cured", i mean all outward symptoms go away, except for the painful sex). About a year ago, I tried going on a completley yeast-free diet. I only lasted ~1.5-2 weeks, but I think it may have been helping. My boyfriend and I broke up about a year after this started happening (for unrelated reasons, he was always very supportive of what i was going through). I wasnt having sex in the months following, so I kind of ignored the problem. Now that I am starting to have sex again, the problem is still there. This is one of the most frustrating things I have ever encountered, as some of you may imagine. I feel like most people I talk to really dont understand.

Fastforward to January, when I am diagnosed with PCOS. I learned that diabetes was something that often went hand in hand with the syndrome, and began to wonder if high blood sugar levels could be giving the yeast something to constantly feed on and live off. Very recently, I have been more thirsty than I ever remember being. As of last night, I cant seem to drink enough water. Ive probably had 70oz since 10pm last night, and my mouth and throat feel dry no matter what.

Im not going to be able to get to a doctor for a little while longer, so I wanted to bring up my concerns with people who may have been through similar situations. I apologize for such a long post, but ive been wanting to get this out for a while. Thank you all so much!!

Katie

Katie

I found out that I was diabetic basically by the same symptoms that you are having now. Except for pain during sex.

In April of 2007 I started having regular itching and burning. I believed it was a yeast infection so I started with the otc meds. It would clear up for awhile and then come right back. Finally I went to see my gyno. On my first appointment she did the exam and a pap and took a urine sample. She said most likely it was a yeast infection but wanted to wait for the reuslts of my tests before prescribing anything. So I waited for 2 weeks, continuing to use otc products that where really no longer working for me. When I returned to my gyno she told me that I had 3x's the amount of sugar in urine than I should have and she believed that I was diabetic. She also said that she was not going to treat me till I got my diabetes under control. That same day I made an appointment with my family doctor but couldn't get in for 2 weeks. So during that time I got a meter and started monitoring my blood sugar. When I finally saw my doctor and showed him my meter and told him what the gyno had said he rx me on the spot with type 2 diabetes and started me on glipizied. He did order blood work and when it came back it confirmed that I was diabetic. He did a a1c test which is a blood test that gives hima average of what my blood sugar has been for the last 3 months. Point of the story......after I started the glipized my yeast infection went away and I have not had one since. Yes, the 2 are definately link to one another. Now I see my family doc every 3 months for regular blood testing. I monitor my blood sugar atleast 4 times a day and it is totally under control.

One more thing. Before and durning these yeast infections I was very thirsty all the time and was drinking water ALL the time. Peeing all the time and I was more tired than unsual. All definate signs of diabetes. So from my experience it sounds highly likely that you are diabetic. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your input. Im going to try and get an appt with my gyno ASAP. That one bout of extreme thirst was an isolated incident - it ended by noon that day and hasnt happened since. I dont find myself to be unusually tired either, but I think this is still worth looking into.

Most definately. You can have all kinds of complications if diabetes go's undiagnosed or untreated. It's worth looking into.
