Looking for some guidance...not sure if I have PCOS.
Hello everyone!
I hope you all don't mind me posting here, but I really don't know where else to go! Here's a little bit of my history (I'll try to make it as short as possible!)
My fiance have been TTC for about 2 1/2 years. We got pregnant in 2003, but I miscarried @ 8 weeks in June 2003. We haven't had any luck since then. (we weren't TTC when we got pregnant in 2003, but started to a couple months later) In 2001 I had my right ovary and fallopian tube removed, while I was pregnant with my DD (I was in high school when I had her and gave her up for adoption...that's another long story!) Anyway, my concern was that I wasn't going to be able to conceive without both of my ovaries and fallopian tubes, but we did in 2003 even though we miscarried. Since we've been TTC so long, I keep thinking it might have something to do with my surgery in 2001. After my miscarriage in 2003, my periods gradually started going out of control. My period only comes when it wants to! I've gone 3 months without a period before, maybe even longer! Right now, my last af was August 1, 2006. I've had nothing since then. I thought I was pregnant, b/c I'm having symptoms (my bbs are hurting...that doesn't happen unless I'm going to have my period or am pregnant, I've been nauseated a few times, and have been having dizzy spells.) I took an HPT tonight and it said "not pregnant." I was looking into PCOS a while back, b/c I thought I might have it. My older sister has it and had to take fertility medicine in order to have her children. Since my miscarriage in 2003, I have gained weight and I know that being overweight is common among people with PCOS. My concern is that my DF and I want to be parents more than anything! I don't have health insurance, so I pay out of pocket for all my Dr. visits. Could I go to Planned Parenthood or some place like that to get tested for PCOS or do I have to go to a special dr? I really want to know if this is what I have, b/c I want to get treatment so we can conceive! I've heard that they try birth control to try and get your period back in sync, but I definetly don't want to be on BC. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated!!! I'm sorry this is so long, I just don't know where else to go. I'm 23 y/o and DF is 27. Thanks for reading my post!!!
If I were you, I would go to the dr. I was diagnosed with PCOS by a family doctor, not a specialist. I don't know much about Planned Parenthood, so I don't know if that's the place to go. I've heard that PCOS runs in families, so if your sister has it, it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to a doctor about it.
I wish you the best of luck!

I was also diagnosed by a regular doctor, not an OBGYN or endocrinologist.
You should definitely go to the doc to find out what's going on. It would be a good idea to pull up the info on this site about lab results and tests so that you'll know what to ask for and what the results mean.
Good luck!

First, I agree with the other cysters, going to the dr. is the most important thing you should do. As for planed parenthood, I don't know much about them. You could try, at this point I think any help would be good.
I do wish you the best of luck and I hope things work out for you. Please keep us posted. If you ever need to talk, you can PM me anytime!
Welcome to soul cysters Laura. Testing done at the Planned Parenthood offices depend on your area. I live in West Virginia and they will test for pregnancy but not to see if you had a condition. I would call your local health department and see if they can refer you to a OB/GYN that would accept monthly payments. Good Luck and keep us informed. I'll pray for you.

Personally I did not find that regular OB/GYN's and Primary Care doctors know enough about PCOS to A) diagnose it and B) treat it. I would call your local social services office to see if they offer a reduced payment insurance plan, a lot of states offer very low cost or free insurance now to people with limited funds. The next thing to do would be to inquire about seeing a specialist. Even if you go to a regular doc, the out of pocket costs for the testing and medications are going to cost a lot without insurance. I would recommend researching how to get low cost insurance to cover these costs. Best of luck and wishing you improved health and conception soon!
I was diagnosed by (and continue to be treated by) a family doc. No one had helped me until he did! That's just my experience though, I just think it's important that you see a doc that you feel comfortable with and get some treatment!
Best wishes! If there's anything I can do to help, please don't hesitate to ask!
Hugs
Jenny
