My hair has thinned significantly A couple years ago, before I knew that PCOS even existed, I took BCPs for three months to "jumpstart" my cycles because they had become extremely weird after the birth of my daughter. I had taken an all progesterone BCP right after she was born five years ago because it was supposed to allow you to continue nursing, while protecting you from another pregnancy. But after three weeks I quit because the side effects were horrid. I gained weight right away and generally felt that my body wasn't "right" from that point on. But a few years later my OB suggested that taking BCPs again might help to make things right. WRONG!
While on the BCPs I noticed that the scalp at the top front of my head had started itching. I thought I might be allergic because a friend of my had had the itching problem when she was on the pill. But three months after I stopped taking them my head was still itching AND my hair started to shed. That's when I did some reading and learned that BCPs can caused shedding after you stop taking them. But instead of stopping, the shedding continued long after I ceased taking the pills (normally it stops six months after).
That's when I started getting tested for things like a slow thyroid. It was only after I'd had tons of tests done that I was able to put things together and realize that I might have PCOS (which I'd learned about in the course of my research). An ultrasound and a fasting insulin test finally showed that I was correct in my diagnosis.
Today my hair is really thin on top and continues to shed, but much more slowly. I hate seeing so much of my scalp when I look in the mirror. I ended up having high testosterone, so I'm spironolactone 100 mg per day, and Metformin 1000 mg per day to help with my insulin resistance. Whenever my head itches now, I know it's from androgens attacking my hair follicles. And this happens mostly when I eat carbohydrates, so I try to cut back, although I haven't been as successful with that as I'd hoped.
So I know how you feel about losing your hair. I always considered my hair to be my best feature. Now I've had to reassess. I have to remember that my best feature is what's inside, where I'm still the same person I've always been, even if the outside is changing in ways I never expected or wanted.
It's a tough lesson at times, but I'm learning.
