Default losing it (hair and sanity)

i got my hair done yesterday, it turned out good.. but when i looked at the back i was like holy crap, im totally getting a bald spot.. good god! im a 23 year old GIRL. i know my hair is thinning like crazy, coming out in the front so i had to cut my hair differently so it's hideable.. but i dont think this will be hideable at all for much longer.

When i got my testosterone checked last time everything was 'normal' arg! i've been avoiding spiro because I heard things get worse once you come off of it and I was hopeing to find a natural alternative that i wouldnt have to come off of if i want to have kids.

im starting to get really freaked out.
I'm not going to just get all depressed and helpless if i go bald though, I'll deal with it.. i'll get a hair transplant or ill ...i dont know. @£$£@$£$@%%%^%^

vancouverNicole,

I totally feel you on this. I've been losing my hair for years, before we even knew about the PCOS...we thought it was due to stress. My doctor suggested simply using Rogaine, but I'm really resistant to using that for two reasons. A) As with most of these hair treatments, once you stop using it, it comes back worse (or so I've heard) and B) I used a Rogaine-like product before (Nioxin) and it was time-consuming, expensive, and stung my skin. Just a big pain. However, I really need to try SOMETHING....I'm getting some serious bald spots myself...and I'm just 22, right around your age! Just this morning my mother looked at me and is like, "Is your hair STILL thinning?" And I'm thinking, no mom, it stopped thinning since you asked me yesterday. She asks quite often now. I know it's because she feels bad, but it's embarassing cuz I KNOW it's showing now.

Anyways...I have an app. with my doc in about a week...I'll ask him about spiro then, and if he says no, then I guess I'll just bite the bullet and go with Rogaine. Otherwise, you and I will just have to invest in some wigs. I've always wanted rainbow-colored hair! Or a purple mohawk....hmmmm....this could turn out better than anticipated....

Good luck,
Dances

Wigs could be fun if we MAKE them be fun. Seriously, though...I had a friend's mom with cancer who wore wigs, and they looked really nice on her. (And it might be interesting to match my hair to my dress )

My dr's app is on Dec. 2nd...I'll update ya on how all that goes then. Let me know how your levels turn out...are you concerned that they're getting worse or that they're just not getting better?

Well, good luck with everything. We can deal with this!

i wonder if i'll go with a natural looking hair piece or a crazy obvious assortment of wigs?

Flutamide and Ortho-Evra (birth control patch) worked really well for me, and you might consider it if you are not TTC. I saw results in probably 4-6 weeks, and it worked at getting rid of some of the excess facial hair as well as increasing the hair on my head. Good luck!

hi,
im hesitant to try BC or spiro because i hear when you come off of things when ttc symptoms come back and sometimes worse.. I see you're TTC now, how are the hair issues now you're off the BC?
thanks!

Sarabelle...thanks for the suggestions! I'll bring that up with my doc, too. But yes, how are your symptoms now that you're ttc?

As for wigs...I think I'd have mostly normal wigs, but one really out there wig....one huge purple mohawk or something for when I need a little pick-me-up.

Thanks for the support guys! It's good to know I'm not alone in this.

Nicole - I suggest you go see Dr. Ryder on MacDonald and 16th.

Basically, he eliminated my depression, stopped my hair loss and I have some regrowth.

I think we talked about him before...

Dances and nicole - My symptoms are actually still not as bad as before I went on the meds, and this is at least 1 month now w/out meds. I can tell my hair is getting a little bit thinner, but I think it would be more conspicuous if I hadn't just had my hair cut. It's a *****...all this PCOS stuff. Either try for a baby and be depressed about the way I look, or indulge my vanity (and try to save my sanity LOL) and not have a baby. It sucks.

nicole - Just wanted to point out that Spiro never seems to work for me, but Flutamide did (in combination with Ortho-Evra). Unfortunately, like Spiro, you HAVE to be on BCP's with it b/c it will cause birth defects.

Sarabelle,

Thanks so much for the info! Yeah, PCOS is quite the double-edged sword. Grrr. But I'm thankful for you guys and that I live in a place where I can get good medical care! ::Trying extra hard to look on the bright side!::
