Default At a loss - what next?

Ok so I have PCOS, was diagnosed at about 17

I dont have periods full stop. I have been on 2 different bcps Dianette and another which I cant remember the name as it was so long ago. Dianette was great for my skin and gave me a period each month but I suffered with depression and paranoia whilst of it.

I am currently on Metformin, I have been on it since the end of May, tbh it is not really doing anything, well I havnt noticed anything, I came off for about a week as I had a terrible flu/fever and couldlt face the effects it gave me. I am back on it though. Met make me feel very neauseas and gasey and my appetite is up and down.

My doctor has also given me 3 months supply of Provera to give me a period, my doctor and gynacologist both said i dont have to constantly take provera every month I can do 3 months on and 3 months off, as long as I havea few bleeds a year.

I feel at a loss, my skin is terrible , sore cystic acne on my face/jawline and chest and back. I am fat and just cant shift any wieght. I have been thinking about maybe going back on dianette to try and help my skin but I know I cant stay on it long term and I worry about the side effects like the depression.

I have been reading others posts about other BCP's that cysters have taken and there are so many pro's and con's I am confused. I am so miserable , I hate looking in the mirror as I look so disgusting and fat. Where do I go from here. Do I stay on the Met, it doesnt seem to be making any difference. Should I try Dianette again?

My doctor is quite nice but at the end of the day there is only so many things they can give me!

I'm no expert and I'm not on Met yet, but from what I've read on other posts, it can take up to 6 months to get the full effects of met. Other than that, I have no advice.

Don't stop the Met!! Your body will adjust to it. It might not help with all of your symptoms, but it will help prevent diabetes.

Talk to your doctor more.

If you are on regular Met, ask about switching to Extended Release. Sometimes that helps with side effects. But don't just stop it.

Have your doctors taken bloodwork? From the PCOS FAQ at http://www.inciid.org/faq.php?cat=infertility101&id=2

  • Fasting comprehensive biochemical and lipid panel;
  • 2-hour GTT with insulin levels (also called IGTT);
  • LH:FSH ratio;
  • Total testosterone;
  • DHEAS;
  • SHBG;
  • Androstenedione;
  • Prolactin
  • TSH
And is doesn't hurt to ask that your ovarian hormones be checked along with it too. (ex: estradiol) Maybe even thyroid hormones. (T3, T4 and their friends)

PCOS is an endocrine problem that affects all of you, even though the name "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome" makes it seem like it's all about menses and ovaries and that's it.

Provera is fine to bring on a period and help discourage cancerous cells from building up, but it doesn't address bringing your hormones into balance so you can feel better long term.

BCP can be a part of your treatment, but before you know what you need (BCPs come in different formulas) you need to know where you are hormone-wise to begin with. Hence insisting on labs.

It's only a blood draw most of the time -- so demand it!

GL!

Hi,
Sorry that you have been diagnosed with PCOS.

how much MET are you on? I was up to 2500 mgs - extended release. To avoid the s/e I usually take it at night - xr so was told that I could take it all at night to sleep throught the worst s/e. I would give it a year - if you have no relief you can either add Avandia or try Avandia itself.

Also, to minimize side effects you should avoid fried foods, greasy foods. I found that it was only when I ate greasy, fatty, fried foods that I had issues. Fast foods would give me issues, fatty meats, dressings/condements, etc may set me off. My stomach was more sensitive to milk and dairy. Met would keep me on the straight and narrow.

Yasmin is one BCP that helps some women who are not TTC.

I found that use of harsh chemicals on my face actually acerbates my acne. Acne products esp those with Salasylic (sp) acid irritate my face. The products that I use that help me are 1)Avon's Keep it quick face wash (very gentle several times per day - morning, after working out and before - bed) 2)Avon's Toner Keep it quick - in the morning, after working out and before bed 3)every other day (if I remember but definately not every day) I use St EIVES (sp) gentle facial scrub 4) Everyday after washing I moisturize with Oil of Olay sensitive skin, oil free moisturizer (the one with sun screen sometimes is too heavy for my face) - use a cotton ball to rub gently in circles so that the extra is absorbed.

I had to stop Met because my liver readings suddenly came off the charts and after stopping met (my gp thought it could be causing it) they are still high. Not to do with Met but apparently something else.

    I am on 500mg of Met, I take it twice a day. apart from the diabetes part I am not even sure what to expect from it?

    what is getting me down so much is my skin, it is so awful. Greasy and Spotty. Thats why I was thinking of going on the BCP again. Like I said Dianette really helped but like Junior_J says I was so emotional all the time.
