Default Lost...

So, I found out last week that I may have PCOS. All because I went to the doctor for a sty in my eye. I took a bunch of tests about a year ago, but the doctor that I saw never called me back to let me know that one of my tests suggested that I may have PCOS. When I went in to get my eye checked, the doctor that was looking at my eye asked if I had gone and had a followup appointment on my test results. I told him that my doctor had never called to tell me that anything was wrong. Now I have to go in and have more tests done tomorrow. It's all a bit unsettling. I've been reading up on PCOS, but I still only have a vague idea of what it all means. According to all of the websites that I've visited, I have most of the symptoms of PCOS as does my older sister. I called both my sisters to make sure that they get tested just in case. I'll be 22 in a month, so I guess that it's good that they caught this early so that I can get treatment. I was just wondering if you could provide me with information. One of my main quetions is about pregnancy. Though I'm not thinking about having children for a long time (I still need to finish college and then my graduate education), I still would like to know if it is one of my options. I read somewhere that women with PCOS can indeed have children, but I was wondering what the odds are. I would also like to know if birth control is the best treatment (considering I'm not trying to have children at this juncture in my life) because that seems to be the concensus for most websites, but I read a couple of personal stories from women living with PCOS who say that they recommend staying away from the birth control treatment. Can anyone help me with these questions? I'm a bit lost and confused. As I'm sure most women are once they find out that they may have PCOS.

If you do have PCOS it's a very good thing to find out now. It's all about hormones, but it's different for different women. While it's true that PCOS can cause fertility problems, it doesn't always. I'm fortunate that I haven't had a problem conceiving. When I got pg with my son I didn't even know I had PCOS. This time I had no problem either. My doctor told me that PCOS can mean it takes longer to conceive than someone without PCOS, or it could be as easy as anyone else. It's very individual.

Birth control is also an individual thing. I can't tolerate most BCP. For me Yasmin is the only one that didn't make me crazy. It doesn't raise your level of androgens (those of us with PCOS do not need more androgens). There is a lot of information here, and the more you learn the better you'll be able to manage it and the better you'll feel.

Good luck to you, and welcome.

Good Luck, this website seems to be helpful to those of us who are LOST also. Iwas diagnosed in 1990-91 and have tried numerous Dr's with no luck & no options given but to stay on B.C. pills. My suggestion is to inform yourself before your appointments & make a list of questions to ask!!
