Hi
I just found out yesterday baby had no heart beat at 13w5d...
I feel like I'm dreaming, the baby looked perfect on the u/s.
I start some drugs tonight to bring on "labour" at home then go for a dnc in the morning, and Im terrified to pass the baby here, but its recommended?
My husband had a good cry in the ER, but I feel like Im a walking zombie inside, like its all a bad dream...
Anyone else have a dnc? What to I have a head of me? tia

I just went through almost the exact same thing on New Years. I was over 14 weeks when the discovered that the heartbeat stopped and I had just had an u/s and 12 weeks that was perfect. My doctor gave me drugs to start taking at home and then admitted me the next morning where they continued to try and induce labour. After 3 days they finally gave up and did a D and E which I was very ready for by that point. It was over very quickly and a little painful but not too bad. I was just so happy to have it over with. If you have any questions or just want to talk you can PM me or post on this thread.

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing your baby after carrying for so long must be excruciating - I can only imagine.
I had a D&C once, but not for a miscarriage. I was having surgery for Endometriosis (which failed) and my OB/GYN did a D&C as well while I was out (which worked wonders! I got pregnant, but miscarried yesterday). Because you were so far along, I would absolutely recommend a D&C because there is often some matter left behind, and it could be detrimental to your next pregnancy. If you were only a few weeks along, it would usually be OK to do without it.
Your doctor may suggest that you do it under local anesthesia with drugs to keep you calm - but I would advise against it. It's very painful (you basically have a metal rod inserted into your cervix to dilate, then a very sharp tool called a curette is used to scrape), and if you fidget even a little bit, your cervical wall could be perforated. I don't know why doctors even suggest local for this procedure. If you do it, definitely have it done under general anesthesia.
You'll have some cramping, and bleeding...in your case, probably quite a bit. However, it's important that you give your next miracle a "fresh start," and that is essentially what this is.
THE CON: Repeated D&Cs can weaken the cervix, and could cause a condition called "incompetent cervix." There is no coming back from this condition. So, I would only have this procedure done once...maybe twice...to be safe.
My prayers are with you and your family, both here and in heaven!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a m/c at 12 weeks last year and it is just heartbreaking. I didn't have a d/c with any of my m/c's. I chose to do it natural and if I, hopefully not, have a m/c again, I will not do it natural again. It took forever and I was an emotional/physical mess for that period of time. Anywho--I just want to give you some ((HUGS)) for the procedure.

In Canada they are very hesitant to do D and C's at all and I know that after 12 weeks they really don't like to do it because the baby is bigger and has bone structure. That is why they tried to induce labour for 3 days with me but nothing was happening so they decided it was riskier to keep waiting (I was getting a temp) than it was to just try the D and E. It all worked out OK for me and there was no tearing of the cervix and no perforation of the uterus.
Oh and they will definitely do it with you completely under. It is a much more involved procedure to do a D and C for a 2nd trimester pregnancy than it is for non-pregnancy related reasons.

Get involved in animal rescue. You won't be sorry. Your heart may break, there may be times when your eyes are red-rimmed for days. You may lose faith in the goodness of people, but your spirit will be renewed by the resilience of those you save. It isn't easy, but it's worth it. I promise you, you will be forever changed.
thanks ladies
the plan so far is to start the drugs to bring on labour and open cervix starting at 1am every 4hrs. Then I have to be at the hospital for 11am.. d&c at 1pm.. He really wasnt big on the d&c but I didnt think trying to pass the baby all alone would be best for me.
Im terrified to take these pills, and to bring on pain and bleeding, its hard to think about..
thanks again ladies

1 or 2 doses of the drugs might not start anything (pain or bleeding). I had 5 or 6 doses and never had any real cramping or bleeding which is why I ended up having the d and e.

They call it a D and E when your farther along and they have to "evacuate" the uterus (sometimes called dilation and extraction). You will probably actually be having a D and E not a D and C.
