Dh & I started the adoption process last year in Ontario but it's no help to us now since we are now settled and want to adopt in Alberta. I have no idea where to begin. We are interested in adopting through the children's aid but can't seem to find the resources needed to proceed. I have checked out this site & this one
I even came across the application to adopt a child but can not find out who to contact.
Either I am a complete moron(which I am guessing is the case) or the info isn't there.
I have contacted the adoption services unit at our local CAS but 2 weeks have passed without a response so I am hoping that someone here can direct me to the right place.
Please & Thank You!!!!
I checked out the website. Did you call:
Intake Line
Phone (403) 297-6038
Fax (403) 297-2130
Maybe they can get you a name.

I live in BC and there are 2 ways to adopt:
1. MCFD-govt, special needs children
2. Private-local infant (10,000) and international (20000)+
We are doing injections/IUI. If that fails, we may start the adoption process.

Hi, although now we are in vancouver, we did adopt through child&family services in Calgary.
The first step is to fill out the application form, send it in, and they will screen you application to determine priority. You will be priority if you are interested in special needs/legal risk/foster to adopt.
once you get a reply, they will offer you parent preparation training, and once you have gone through your training, they will start your homestudy. Things may have changed, but this is how it basically went for us. If you have more questions, or need supposrt, feel free to email me alniven@telus.net
good luck with the process, you will be in my thoughts!!

Well I finally got a reply from the email that I sent awhile ago.
Just in case anyone is interested or thinking about adopting in Calgary this is what I received from the Permanency Planning Specialist yesterday.
Thank you for your interest in adoption.
For more information about adoption I would recommend that you attend one of our Adoption Orientation Sessions held the first Wednesday of every month at our Richmond Square Office, #80, 3915 51 St SW, Calgary from 7 to 9 PM (going west on Richmond Rd it is before Sarcee, next to the Canadian Tire on the north side of Richmond Rd). Our next session will be held on May 3,2006.
At these sessions you will be given information about the adoption process with Calgary and Area Child and Family Services Authority along with information about the children we are looking for families for.
You can also check out the provincial website at www.child.gov.ab.ca or the Calgary and Area Child and Family Services Authority website at www.calgaryandareacfsa.gov.ab.ca and look under "adoption" or you can call our intake line at 297-6038 to speak to one of our Adoption Workers.
So are you going to go to the seminar ? It sounds similar to the Ontario process ..
UGH to have to do those classes again ! Or is it just an info seminar ?

I wish we could go to the next seminar but dh & I have to a attend a business conference for the week in Banff.
I am guessing that things aren't too different from Ontario so I am hoping that since I learned all there was to learn in Ontario by starting the process there they might be nice enough to start things here without making me attend the session.
I'll call Monday and find out and if it is possible to start the process with out attending & if it isn't...I guess we'll go in June.
I'll let you know what they say tomorrow.
oh ya, the orientation, It's just an hour or 2, and is a very basic intro.
They talk about the childrent that are available, as well as the problems they might have.
They want to make sure you are serious and know what you are getting into, and are realistic in your expectations. Too bad you can't go. You may be able to get permission to attend a session outside of Calgary though, i think that would be worth looking into.

I spoke to dh again tonight. We may just drive back for it(It's only an hour)
He's going to speak to our boss and we should find out tomorrow if we are going to the meeting or not.
Well it looks like we are going to go no matter what.
We decided that even if we have been through this once already in Ontario that we may as well follow things by the book so that nothing is held against us at a later date.
I'll update if there is anything worthwhile reporting after we attend the meeting.
