Post Lost weight- no longer a diabetic?

Has anyone ever lost a lot of weight & is no longer having to worry about your sugar level?

I'm not sure if this is wishful thinking or something that a doctor has told you, but I've heard this before. From what I understand it is a total untruth.

Although losing weight, getting exercise, and eating right can help you control your diabetes, even to the point where you no longer have to use medication, it will NOT mean that you are not a diabetic anymore. Once you are a diabetic, you are always a diabetic. There is no going back from that. However, if you get to the point through weight loss, diet and excercise where you are in wonderful control of your sugar it may be possible to not have to take meds or to check your blood sugar so often! You would still need to be monitored by a doctor and that sort of thing though to make sure that your levels don't start creeping up!

Hope that helps!

Kathy

Hi!
I just wanted to agree with Kathy, she's right!
Once a diabetic always a diabetic. You can't cure diabetes, but you can control it.

Sorry! Hang in there.

I've got one for you. Some doctors see that your blood sugar is within normal range, and your hem a1/c comes back normal so they take you off the medicine and tell you that you are no longer diabetic. This happened to a friend of mine's mother and now she is legally blind and just under went heart surgery this past Fall. Why, you ask? Because once you are diabetic, you are diabetic.

You got where you are through diet and exercise and medication. That doesn't mean you stop all of it now that you are at your goal. You have to maintain this for the rest of your life.

My diabetes is under control and my dr told me it was "as if I were normal", but he did not say I was no longer diabetic and take away my medication. He praised me for having it under control now because of all the problems that not having in control can lead to in the future.

This topic was good to bring up because I think there are a lot of regular doctors who really are ignorant of diabetes care.

Can you imagine if all you had to do was lose weight (okay, so that isn't necessarily the easiest thing to do) and exercise a bit and then you'd no longer be a diabetic? That would rule! I'd have all the cake in the world! *laugh* Then I'd gain all the weight back and have to do it all again of course. Hehehe.

I've heard of doctors telling diabetics that they were no longer diabetic. How nutty. It is sad that they can't be bothered to teach them better in Medical school!
