Well, I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS after having suspected it was the cause of my problems for a year or so. I have a couple questions and a couple paths to choose to take care of my PCOS problems and for this, I have questions for those who have faced the same problems.
My husband and I have been trying to have another child for 3 years now, with 2 miscarriages. It's been near impossible since my last miscarriage in 2004 (FEB) as I have had only 4 cycles since then. I recently (this Labor day weekend) resumed my period (through Provera) as it had been since Oct 2004 since my last period.
I will be starting a program in Jan. that will last for 16 months and for that, I would like to put off getting pregnant until this time next year, however, I want to get my PCOS under control.
I had bloodwork done that came back with a Total Testosterone that was pretty high, a normal TSH, and a perfect fasting glucose. So I know that at this point, I am not insulin resistant, however, I have a very big family background of type 2 diabetes so I know it's a very big possibility for me. Also, since the birth of my daughter 3 1/2 years ago, I've consistently been gaining weight, no matter what I've done to lose it. Last summer, for 3 months I went to the gym a minimum of 5 times a week...and hardly ate (I was very good about this) and only lost 2 lbs. and it wasn't like I had lost a lot of inches or turned it all into muscle, it's been very hard.
My doctor would like me to decide what path I want to take with my PCOS. I can go on Metformin, I can go on BCP's, I can do nothing, I can induce my period with Provera. I don't know exactly what I want to do or what would be the best path for me to take in order to help me get my weight and PCOS under control. I would like to get back to my weight before my daughter before I get pregnant again, but I would like to stay away from BCP's (it seems as though this is what started my problems in the first place).
I would like any advice on what anyone has chosen to do. Any good results. Also, if anyone knows of a good diet plan that has worked with PCOS. It seems as though, no matter how healthy my diet is, it doesn't get me anywhere. Any feedback that I can get would be greatly appreciated!
I don't think a fasting glucose will indicate IR. The docs should do a 3 hour gtt and insulin levels at the same time.
I do the metformin thing and it has helped me.
Take a look here and see if this is helpful.
Welcome to SC! http://www.soulcysters.com/symptoms.html
I'd like to help get your questions answered, but I'm a little new to pcos as well, so I'm still learning! I would suggest that you ask around on the other boards (TTC, Medications, Diet & Exercise, etc.), since a lot of the ladies that hang out there don't always check out the newbie page. hth!
A great big welcome {hug} to you!
