Hello as my name says I am a concerned husband. My wife and I are looking for answers. My sister inlaw was diagnosed with PCOS several years ago and it is obvios my wife has it as well unfortunately her doctors are non to quick to diagnos her or give her answers and her sister lives 8 hours away so her doctors are not an option. My wife is 25 and we were trying to get pregnant for 2+ years and now have stopped trying for many reasons including my age I am 37, money and other things out of our controll at the moment. My wife has had problems with her ovaries since she was 10 or 11 when she had cyst that doctors didn't diagnos for a long time do the fact that she was so young and didn't even look at this as a possibility of being the problem. She has struggled with her weight since about that time. She works out 5 times a week and not light workouts when she was going to a gym before we bought a home gym her trainer couldnot believe how hard she worked. She lost nothing in 6 months. The only time she lost anything she worked out 3 times a day (I'm not kidding) and even at that she could not lose fast or much.
So just when she/we came to terms with not having kids and that she will live with a ridicuosly painful and heavy cycle and a weight problem she gets hit with a 1 inch circle of hair falling out seemingly over night, understandable she has been a reck the last week since this newest problem. None of this would ever change how I feel other than my concern for her selfesteem and personal image. As a man I have been prepared for the possibility of going bald and it would still upset me and my image, but I can not imagine how it would be for a woman. Now that I rambled any advice on where to start for us would be helpful. She does have an appointment with a new doctor who hopefully will do the tests needed and take her concerns more seriously. We really need to know about resources and what tests should be done. Thank you
Hopefully the new doctor will be able to help. If not, make an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist - most of them should be at least somewhat knowledgeable about PCOS.
They will probably look at her ovaries and check for cysts, as well as take blood and look at various hormone levels. She might be put on metformin or another similar medication, which could help greatly. Good luck.
Thank you she is currently on Metformin and it has seemed stopped her weight gain. she was on clomid when we were trying to concieve she reached the highest dose they would consider and were amazed she wasn't going crazy (she handled it well). With a new primary dr on tues. and her yearly with her ob in less than 2 weeks maybe we can start getting the right tests and some answers. thanks again
Sounds like a plan. And remember that Clomid isn't the only thing that can help - it never did anything for me, but with the help of other drugs, the hubby and I are now expecting our third precious child. There are lots of options out there, and do check out an RE - most OB's don't do much fertility stuff beyond Clomid and other very basic things.
