Unhappy Please help - lots of ?'s - sorry so long

After not having my period for 6 months - which prompted me to go to the dr's and eventually get dx with PCOS - I have now had my period twice - even if it was 46 days apart.

There are a lot of clots in my flow - is that cysts shedding? or am I stupid?

Was it a blessing in disquise not having my period for 6 months so I would go to the dr and get dx so that I could fix my underlying problems?

Why all of a sudden am I getting af when I haven't even started any meds yet? If I am getting my period semi-regular does that mean I don't have pcos afterall - I do have the ring of cysts though!??? I have not been dx with IR and I am thin - but I def think I have sugar issues - actually my mom has hypoglycemia and about 12 or so years ago the doctors thought I might have it as well but they just told me to watch what I eat - well I have very poor nutritional habits - I just never feel like eating anything most of the time - and when I do feel hungry most of the time I crave carbs - I've been shakier than usual the last few days - this morning I ate a yogurt to try and get rid of the shakes but I'm still feeling shaky.

Now I just don't know what to do about meds. The doctor said he will probably put me on met - I go 12/12 to discuss treatment. Should I take met if I am hypoglycemic - and if my periods now seem to be starting to work themselves regular again? I have terrible acne and would like to alleviate that but I can't take bcp's because I get terrible migraines. Which is what led me to discover my period yesterday - one hit me from out of nowhere (sometimes I get a warning) - I thought to myself it can't be my period - sure enough I went to the bathroom and there it was - and now it is really heavy and very clotty - and I'm getting a lot of sharp pain not normal cramping pain.

I'm just so tired of feeling like crap. Yesterday I slept nearly all day - guess that was because of my period - but I am always tired and feel like sleeping all day. The acne is really starting to bring me down - lower than I am usually. I yell all the time at my oldest , most of the time I fly off the handle for no reason- I am utterly useless to my df - I feel like a bad mother - a bad "spouse" - I feel completely worthless!

Hello and Welcome to SC!
I am glad that you found this site.
The girls here are amazing and so supportive.
I just want to make a suggestion....Have you had your blood levels checked because it could be that with heavy periods and with you being so tired that your iron levels may be low.....i would ask to be checked to see if you are anemic.
Good Luck!

WELCOME CYSTER!!!!

Oh sweetie! I'm so sorry your having such a hard time right now. I think you should still start the meds. I've gone 6 months without AF before, but when i was dx, I had been regular for more than a year. that's the beauty of this crap, it does what it wants. The met helped me with my mood swings and so did Topamax. As for feeling tired, I agree with another cyster, it's possible you could be anemic. Talk to your dr about that.

But one way or the other you will have to start taking better care of yourself nutritionaly. Once you do, you will feel so much better!! Your energy level goes up and you have more stamina and of course when you feel better, you don't snap as easily.

I know your not IR, but i'm sure this is good for anyone. It's similar to a diabetic diet. I follow a book called "The insulin resistance Diet". It's very livable. I found my copy at barnesandnoble.com. You might look into it and give it a try. After about a month you should notice a huge difference in how you feel. But again................go talk to you dr.

Lots of love!

There are different types of PCOS. You don't have to have irregular cycles or cysts to have PCOS. Clots are not cysts, just blold that has clotted. Met is a good idea. Even cysters without a positive IR test still do well on it. What other meds are you on?

Thank you for your replies - I have not had my blood levels checked since before I had these two periods - this one has got to be the heaviest one I have ever ha - this might be tmi but yesterday I told df that if felt like my crotch was going to fall out - and the clots OY VEY!

I did buy the Insulin Resistance Diet because I read somewhere that it was a good healthy eating diet - just haven't been able to wrap my head around reading it yet - so much information to take in - I feel like I'm on overload sometimes.

I am not on any meds yet - I go to the dr on 12/12 to discuss treatment, but when I was there last he said he would probably put me on met because I don't do well on bcp's.

Isn't Topamax a migraine medicine - that helped your moods?? If I could kill two birds with one stone that would be great. I just renewed my rx for zomig but to prevent them would be even better.

I know I have to eat better - I have to talk myself into it!

Well thank you again - hope everyone has a happy Turkey day! gobble gobble gobble

Welcome cyster!

:Hugs: I'm so sorry that you're feeling down hun. But your cysters are here for you, anytime you need us. I don't know if it will help you to hear this, but I want to tell you that you are not worthless. You're going through such a hard time right now and you need some support and encouragement. I'm glad to listen if you need someone.

Your periods sound like mine around the time I was diagnosed w/ PCOS. I wouldn't have one for months, then I'd bleed for weeks on end. I always had lots of clots and it was always very heavy when it did come. Like the other cysters said, your body is trying to "clean out". I was put on BCP before my diagnosis, and this helped me to have one period each month, but it was still very heavy. Then I found a new doc and he diagnosed me and gave me metformin. It helped me tremendously. My doc did say that met generally doesn't cause problems with hypoglycemics who are taking it for PCOS.

I used to have menstrual migraines every single month. Mine have improved a lot since I quit BCP (and for some reason, I haven't had as many since I gave birth to my daughter 2 years ago). I do have depression related to my period (I only have it when AF is on the way). Prozac has helped me a lot there.

I hope this helps hun. Lots of hugs
Jenny

Topamax is a multi-purpose drug. It was originally used for epilepsy in high doses, then in moderate doses found to work with migranes, now they've discovered that in small doese it can help with some of the symptoms of PCOS. It is relatively new at treating this, but it's worked for me. I only take 25mg a day and I have to tell you, I've never felt better. My depression and stress levels are much better now, I sleep better, and it also helps contribute to my weight loss. Now, every woman is different and I haven't had any side effects, but there are some. The one I can find is loss of words. It seems some woman experience consetration problems while on this. Of course they were on high doses. One lady was on 1500mg!!! So if you do try it, I suggest a small amount and pay attention to not being able to remember certain words or having trouble concentrating on things. The other thing I like about this is that unlike a lot of anit-depressants, it doesn't kill the sex drive.

HTH!!

thank you honeybear and jenny -

I think I will mention Topamax to my doctor - if I could surpress the migraines, treat the pcos and ward off the depression all at once ! wow that would be great and it def sounds great if it does not kill the sex drive - that just leaves the acne to get rid of and I do not want to get preg. so I really need to find an affective alternative to bcp's to prevent. Don't want to do the condom - he hates it - I hate it.

I've contemplated trying the bcp's again - maybe a low dose but don't know if I want to risk bringing on the mirgraines and I know if I was to do the Topamax I think it makes bcp's ineffective.

Another issue is I am terrible at taking pills - I gag on them - I forget to take them or whatever.

I have been on and off anti-depressants so many times because I just hate taking pills -I usually convince myself that I don't need them and I can get better without them. I don't take multi-vitamins like I should - I just can't seem to get into a routine of taking them.

I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to take pills, I was the exact same way! I wouldn't even take a simple aspirin for a headache. i would just keep telling myself that if I relaxed it would go away, ha! I have excrutiating pain with AF, I would just lay in my bed with a heating pad and cry it was so awful, all because I didn't want to take a pill. I tell ya, I know better now. I take my meds religiously, and I feel great for it too! I take my Met with breakfast and dinner and I take a vitamin at lunch, soon I hope to add to my vitamins. Now when I get AF and the pain with it, I take that pain med. People like us who hate taking meds have nothing to worry about. I see my Mom on a daily basis take so many meds...............not one of them helping her. If the pill isn't helping me, I'm not taking it. You just need to train your brain to think of your meds differently. Like for example, you bcp's give you migranes, don't take them. As for bc, try diaphrams, that's what me and my DH use, We don't like condoms either. My dr. doesn't believe in bcp's, that's probably why I am against them. She says for women with PCOS, their not good to take. Even with the Topamax, you'll still need the Met. They kinda work together. As for the acne, you may be different, I know a lot of the cysters on here use other products and are happy, but the only thing that works for me is the proactiv. It really does work. I've tried lots of other products with no success. I'm happy to report that I'm back on my proactiv and although my skin is "purging" itself, I know that there is an end in site.

I'm sorry this is so long, I just wanted to let you know that I understand completely where your coming from, but take baby steps, you'll get through it. Plus, we're here to help!

:Hugs cyster:

How are you doing tonight?

I agree with honeybear, I take my meds with a meal, and once I get into that routine, it seems to be easier to remember.

Hope you feel better soon hun.
