Default Low blood sugar

I was at the doctor today and after some bloodwork I started to feel shaky, weak and nauseous. They put me in a room and took my blood sugar. They told me it was 63 and it was fine. The thing is, I have been feeling hypoglycemic for some time now and I had a copule of fasting levels that were higher than this one, one was 82 and the other was 91. The 63 came 2-1/2 hours after a meal of chicken fingers and peanut butter crackers and tea with milk. I feel this is low. Does anyone have any insight. Thanks.

Unhappy Also cold and weak

Hi,

Since I've started my low carb diet two weeks ago, I also think I'm feeling the effects of low blood sugar with symptoms of weakness and cold hands and feet.

I don't know if this is true but I read on another website that since our pancreas is so used to making large doses of insulin, that sometimes it still does that even when it's only a small amount of sugar/carb in our meal and because there is little carb, too much inuslin lowers our blood sugar. Another symptom of this is excess urine.

Hopefully w/ continued low carb the pancreas will stop making too much insulin when it doens't need to. My mom is a diabetic and when her blood sugar is below normal she is supposed to drink fruit juice BUT w/ us I don't know if that helps us or hurts us by causing our pancreas to create more insulin. Have to ask doc.

At first I thought it was an iron problem so I started taken iron supplements but now I take Chromium Picolinate the past few days and I think it's helped. On the bottle it says it assists insulin. I no longer get the shakes from being so cold, but still have the cold/hands feet. I live in LA and usually the weather is good so I don't think it's cause of winter.

Cold hands and feet is a sign of low blood sugar? How come?

I've never heard this before, but I can say that my hands and feet are always cold.

Hmmmmm...this is interesting. I can understand why low blood pressure would lead to cold hands and feet, but I'm trying to figure out what mechanism would cause that from low blood sugar.

Share they knowledge if you know why ....thanks.

Hi,

If you've had cold h/f for a while it probably isn't linked to lbs. Mine occurred after starting low carb but since taking chromium I have stopped the other lbs symptoms like shaking and dizziness so maybe the coldness is caused by another source since it won't go away. If you have these symptoms too you may have lbs...

Nausea; extreme hunger.
Feeling nervous or jittery.
Cold, clammy, wet skin
Excessive sweating that is not caused by exercise.
A rapid heartbeat
Numbness or tingling of the fingertips or lips.
Trembling.

I hope I don't have lbpressure as well. I usually have been on the high range.

I read in a book that when lbs hits, insulin resistance people shouldn't drink sugary drinks...but it didn't say what we should do.

Hmmmmmmm....rapid hearbeat is a sign of low blood sugar as well? I hadn't heard that either. I almost always have a rapid heartbeat (over 100 beats per minute), despite the fact that my blood pressure is usually about 100/70, which is normal. I've mentioned it to my doctor several times, and she always acts like it's no big deal. I exercise five times a week, so I know it isn't from being out of shape.

Does anyone know a good website that addresses these issues in people with low blood suger (rapid heart rate and cold hands and feet)???

You probably don't have a problem with low blood sugar, because your symptoms seem continuous and low blood sugar comes in attacks. Even if you were having an attack and didn't know it, your blood sugar would no longer be low once you ate something.

I think those can ALL be symptoms of low blood sugar, but for me, it's definitely the tingling (mine goes on in legs and arms as well) and slight dizzyness. I know it can be different for everyone, but what you're describing doesn't sound like low blood sugar to me.

EMMA - For low blood sugar, a good idea is having a snack right away - one serving of carbs (15 grams) with 7 grams of protein...this will raise your blood sugar (the carb) and keep you from digesting it too quickly (the protein). I usually do drink a sugary something or have a glucose tablet first because it's faster acting and it only takes a little to raise the blood sugar back up, then I have a snack right away.
