Ok, I'm freaking out here. I just got done working out at Curves and they happened to have people from the local osteoporosis testing center doing ultrasound bone mass testing. I, on a whim, decided to have it done. Well, I'm glad I did!!! I've got the bone mass of a 60+ year old!!!!! They are recommending that I have a full bone density screening to see how bad the loss is.
I asked if it was because I've never been a big milk drinker and they seemed almost more concerned that there might be an underlying illness that is causing the bone loss. I almost laughed when she mentioned that problems with hormones and irregular periods might contribute to this. I blurted out about being PCOS and she was just nodding her head. Great, one more thing for us cysters to worry about. I'm going to try to get in for the other test soon.
I'm a little nervous since I'm a police officer and have the potential of getting into fights etc, which increase my risk of breaking something in the first place! I called my mom right away since it is hereditary and she has never been tested. My aunt has PCOS and mom is going to call her.
Dear Kelly,
At the age of 38 I was shocked to discover I have arthritis in my neck and upper spine, that was all they xrayed so far, because of my lame insurance. Have pain all down my spine. ARGH!
I have a feeling it has to do with all those missed periods and whacky hormones. I got that theory while watching a PBS program about anorexics and how they can develop arthritis because of their missed periods.
Kelly....have you ever had your HGH (human growth hormone) level checked? My endocrinologist checked me for this, since many of the symptoms are the same as PCOS. Mine is somewhat low, so they are keeping a close eye on it. Low HGH levels can cause problems with your bone density.
don't worry about not drinking milk. regardless of the marketing people, milk is not the best source of calcium you can get. you'd be better off eating calcium rich veggies, or even calcium enriched orange juice. there are many people who can't drink milk who have fine bone density.

I found out in Jan this year that i have the dread arthritis in middle of spine and that my spine is also twisting @ 30 just before i turned 31. also i get a lot of pain in hips aswell now. your not alone i wonder if its connected to PCOS,,,,,,,,,or as my dad suffered with athriis aswell? I may have inhereted it?
I discovered 2 years ago that I had bone loss in my wrist after taking a tae kwon do class and falling on my wrist. I thought it was fractured, so I went to my dr and she had it xrayed and discovered that it wasnt fractured but there was bone loss there. She advised me to take calcium supplements and try to eat calcium rich veggies (she knows I'm lactose intolerant) and when I do that I don't have any pain in my wrist. If I don't take my supplements any amount of weight put on my wrist will cause it to hurt.
just my 2 cents

I go for a full bone density scan on Oct. 14th. I'm pretty nervous that the results are going to be bad. I'm sure a majority of the loss is from being bulimic for about 13 years on and off. I'm trying to get a handle on that so I won't make myself even worse.
On top of this, I need to get my tonsils out!!! No one told me I'd completely fall apart at 31. First a hysterectomy, then the bone thing, now I've gained about 10 lbs since coming off bcp, etc... GRRRRRRR!
