Red face Low carb diet and granola

My acupuncturist wants me to go on a low carb diet. She also told me to eliminate ALL dairy products. My question is : What CAN I eat? I eat a lot of granola bars (about one per day) and sometimes granola. Is granola OK on a low carb diet? The granola bars I eat are low in sugar and made out of whole grain oats, but when I asked my acupuncturist, she said, "Well, you just have to check the label." I'm not sure what I'm supposed to check it for!

That's a good question, and I think she should have explained how to read the label!

The way I was taught (by dieticians, especially when I was pregnant) was to look at the total carbs, then you can subtract the amount of fiber from the total carbs.

As for the dairy-- I've never gone off dairy before. I use low-fat dairy items for protein in low-carb dieting. (Cheese, skim milk, etc.)

Sorry, I really feel like I'm not helping you much here! I'm sure another cyster will be able to do better than I have...

Good luck
Jenny

HI!

Do you know how to find the "kosher" designation on a package?? This is an easy way to see if it has any "dairy" in it as it will have a 'D' next to the designation to denote dairy ingredients. A lot of time, it is on the front of the box with a circle and a 'U' in it. It is a stricter than your actupuncturist may have wanted but is a good place to start. My SIL did that when she had to limit dairy. (Many products use dairy as a packaging ingredient -- like Tuna).

Good luck --

Yep, read the labels. 15-16 grams of carbs equals one serving of carbs.

My dietician has me eating 3 carbs/meals (45 grams) and 3 snacks a day worth one carb each. That's 12 carbs/day. Depending on your current weight, if you wish to lose weight, etc. will depend on how many carbs a day one should have.

Carbs=breads (includes grains, etc.), fruits, starchy veges (corn, peas), and milk. These are the basics.

Not all breads are created equal. Eat whole wheat breads. White breads will turn to glucose much more quickly and there's so little nutrients in there.

I've also been linking proteins to my carbs when i eat so I don't have spikes in my glucose levels and crave more carbs. It's been a lifesaver. One serving of protein is 8 gr.

These are the basics. HTH. Granola, depending on the kind, could be very high in carbs. Read how many grams of carbs there are per serving and decided if it's worth it.
