Default Low Carb Diets

Has anybody tried doing the low carb thing and did it work? I have yet to find a diet that works with me and I can see if low carbs work, but I'm sure it will be a little difficult.

Low-carb dieting is working for me very well. It is easy to stick to and I never feel hungry. I've lost 13 pounds in three months and my PCOS symptoms are much improved.

I cut out all sugar, breads, grains, starches, etc., and most fruits. I don't eat any processed foods or artificial sugars. I don't eat dairy, although many low-carbers do. I do eat lots of veggies, meats, fish, poultry, eggs, and nuts. It sounds limiting but it's pretty easy after the first week.

(I'm also exercising, so the weight loss isn't entirely because of the diet. I think exercising makes sticking to ANY diet easier.)

I TOTALLY agree. For me, there's something about regular exercise that makes me naturally choose healthier foods and smaller portions.

Yes low carb actually helped me. I started at 218 lbs in February, my heaviest ever. I have been watching my carbs since then and since August this year I actually went on Atkins induction. Till now since Feb 2009 I have lost 20 pounds. This month I got my period in a much better shape. That is to say although I usually get periods every 23 days and that too with atleast 18-24 hours of very dark brown discharge prior to period and same at the end. This time however I got my period after 33 days, I did not experience the dark brown discharge prior to it and also I was through it in 7 days only ( I usually get 8-9 days of period). I'm more energetic, my mood swings have decreased a bit.
Since the last 4 days I have off the track, due to family holiday and but I am still trying to avoid as much refined carbs as possible.
Hope this helps.

I've lost about 30+ lbs since starting induction (Atkins) at the end of June. I am not exercising yet. I started at 255 and I'm not at 223. I have a long way to go but I found that Atkins works for me. It also managed to regulate my cycle. I've had two 30 days cycles since then. Now I'm on day 31 and still waiting but I think it's coming.

It works for me when nothing else did. I think everybody is different and that you need to find what works for you.

Good Luck!
Terri

I've been on a low-carb lifestyle for almost 17 months now. I've lost around 130 pounds so far. I don't eat anything processed. I try to stay under 20 carbs a day. I don't eat potatoes, pasta, rice, or bread. I stay away from sugars as much as I can (no soda). I drink a lot of water and hot green tea. Fruits are still part of my daily diet, although I try to stay away from fruits like bananas and pineapple. I love berries. It's been a slow process to lose this much weight. I'm only half way there, but so far I don't feel hungry. I feel better than ever (carbs and sugar made me so sluggish and tired), and maybe in another year or two I'll be at my goal. I try to exercise daily which consists of walking. Walking makes me feel better. Hopefully as I lose the weight, I can do more activities. Good luck!

Slow?!?! 130 pounds in 17 months?!?! That is a PHENOMENAL rate of weight loss - nothing slow about it at all... MAJOR CONGRATS!!

When you get to your goal (and you will), you'll look back and it will feel really fast...

It took me 14 months to lose 90 on low carb, and even now (12 years later), I still think it was the fastest 14 months of my life.

As you continue to lose, exercise will become more and more important because your metabolism is naturally slowing down (because you weigh so much less). I worked out 2x a day from the beginning of my weight loss journey (first, for only a few minutes at a time), and within a few weeks worked up to working out a LOT (and I actually liked it, for a change )

Keep up the fabulous work!!!

I follow a diet very similar (most of the time ) that you do, It has been very very successful for me. I lost 70 lbs from the beginning of Feb 09 to July 09. I started out at around 265, and now am hovering around 200 give or take 5lbs. I have stabilized into maintaining this for right now, because i had to stop exercising for a surgery, and its been hard to start back up.
And YEAH! I agree with KAT, that's amazing!

Thank you! Your doing awesome yourself! I at one point never though I would get back down to 200, so it was sort of surreal to me, as I haven't weighed this little in over 10 yrs. But you'll get there! Its all about being healthy and feeling great.

Thanks everybody for your replies! I think I'm going to try the low carb diet now. I just need to figure out exactly what to eat and what not to. It shouldn't be too difficult since DH travels for work and isn't home a whole lot for me to cook for him. Congratulations on your weight losses!!!!

Do you like salad? I found that it helped me to get creative w/ different meats and veggies, and toss them w/ romaine or baby spinach.
I have also been known to eat a portion of meat, like fish or chicken, with a VERY large bowl of steamed broccoli, LOL. But I LOVE broccoli.
I also incorporated alot of green beans and mushrooms into my diet, they fill you up, but are considered negative calories, which means your body burns more calories to digest them, than you actually eat.
Good Luck! And if you need any more suggestions, or support, feel free to PM me. I wish I had joined up on here when I started, It would have made it much smoother especially when I did hit the, Oh god, I don't want to eat THAT again. LOL, its all about being creative in healthier ways.

I do like salad, green beans, mushrooms, and broccoli. What kind of meat did you get.. like steaks etc. I did diet once and ate mainly chicken and salmon with nothing on it along with veggies and I lost about 10 lbs fast, but then I stopped when I moved closer to family again. I LOVE to eat cooked onions just cooked in olive oil, but you can't really have a lot of onions on a low carb diet can you?

Depends on how you define 'a lot'.

It might be helpful to get on a specific program so you have some guidelines to follow.
