I LOVE to eat cooked onions just cooked in olive oil, but you can't really have a lot of onions on a low carb diet can you?
I try to stick with lean meats. So if I get steak, it doesn't have a lot of fat in it. But sometimes the grocery budget just can't handle the more expensive stuff, so if I do buy a cheaper type of meat that I can trim the fat off, I do.
Like, I made a whole chicken in the crockpot, but before I put it in there, I trimmed all the fat and skin off, or as much as I could.
Try some of the seasonings, like Lemon pepper, Mrs. Dash, etc.
I eat tons of onions and garlic, that is a staple in our food here. Just about everything I cook has an onion in it. LOL.
A cup of onions has about 55 calories and approximately 12 carbs in it. But onions are one of those veggies that have indigestible fiber, so part of it you won't actually digest completely.
The vegetables I stay away, and they aren't completely "vegetables" are mainly potatoes and corn. I watch my green pea intake too, but its still better to eat than a bowl of pasta or white rice.
Following a plan does help many people. Especially if you've never really followed a dieting plan, some need that structured jump start.
I've done it, and for me, I personally found it too difficult to adhere to a specific plan. But it did help in discovering what foods are good and what foods aren't especially for low carb or Insulin resistance.
There is also this cooking show, called Blaine's Low Carb Kitchen on Fittv.com that has some great recipes and low carb alternatives to classic recipes, and they turn out fantastic, I've used a couple.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you so much Samie for all your advice! I LOVE potatoes so I knew when I would start this diet that would be the hardest part, but I'm sure that I can do this and once I've started learning more about it hopefully incorporate some potatoes back into my life on and off.

I think the easiest part will be only having to buy for myself while my husband is gone for about 2 months straight on a job. So I know that I won't have things I shouldn't eat tempting me in the pantry or fridge. I'll see how this diet goes with me doing it on my own and if I see that I'm not losing any from it or that it isn't helping I will try and find a specific low carb diet to stick to.

Thanks again for all the replies!!

I've been low carbing for about 2 months and I have lost quite a bit. I'm downb 38 pounds and hoping to lose a lot more by Christmas. I have a lot to go. It's nice to see others are trying it too.

That's AWESOME! I'm so happy for you losing that much! That's a great success story. You didn't lose it in much time either, 2 months, that's great.

I tried the south beach diet but tweeked it to my lifestyle..there are 3 phases but I didnt move from phase 1 even though you are only meant to be on it for about 2 weeks..

The hardest was to give up the potatoes, rice, pasta (how I miss that!) and bread..but once your body detox's its fine. I dont even miss them anymore. I am indian so we tend to eat a lot, A LOT of rice, naan etc..the worst was to start eating curry (totaly low carb'd and modified - poor DH!) with a spoon!

I also gave up dairy and fruit - and cereal - so my diet basically was mainly eggs, veggies grilled or steamed, salad and chicken or salmon or tuna, tofu and different lentils..after the first 2 weeks it was about getting creative with the food as it was getting boring, eating the same food every 3 / 4 days!!!

I say "was" as I lapsed when I went back home after 3 years to meet my family.. but today is my first day back on.

I lost 25pounds from March to before I went to England which was July...I am hoping to lose more before our next trip in January.

This blog is great. I am new to this..I just became a member today. I am 270 pounds and I know my body is falling apart. I am only 36 but I have PCOS, high blood pressure, inflammation and tons of other things. I have tried and succeeded at low carb diets in the past, but I continue to disillusion myself into thinking that I can lose weight with eating low-fat, high carbs. Obviously not. This time I must do it. Thanks for your success stories and your real talk. This will be good for me.

Zaina, can relate to you about the potatoes, I love potatoes. I live in Texas where its tortillas and chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes out the wahzoo.
We have several BBQ joints and their menu listed vegetables are: potato salad, pinto beans, cole slaw, and boiled potatoes. Uh...are those really vegetables?? And they practically give you a loaf a bread with any plate. Its crazy. I was forced to be very creative eating out, if we did.

I have to admit too that potatoes are GREAT, but I also know that I'd love to see myself back down to my original weight before my weight skyrocketed a few years ago. That outweighs the want of eating a potato, at least that's what I'm telling myself. I haven't started the low carb diet quite yet. My DH leaves next month and will be gone about 2 months so I'm starting when he leaves in hope that when he comes back I'll look at least a bit skinnier. I want to lose it in hopes of fully ttc next summer, which we aren't exactly trying to prevent it right now.

Isn't this site great though, I've gotten all of my questions answered from this site and I'm glad I found it a few months ago! I want to congratulate every body who has succeeded in losing weight and hope the best for everybody, like me, that is trying to lose it! We can do it together, I'm sure of it!!

I am going to start watching my carb intake tomorrow. I want just one last day to enjoy my carbs!!!! I have a family history of diabetes and I have pcos. So it is going to be a lifestyle change. I need to do this for myself.

Anyone know of a good recipe resource for low carbs??

I am glad I have found others who are low carbing. It's nice because my hubby and I are LC together. He's lost 41 pounds in 2 months. I had the flu for the last 2 weeks and cheated a bit while sick. I had toast and stuff, but I jumped right back on. I want to keep losing. I have so much to lose and this seems to be working

How much has everyone lost or planning to lose?

I am very large. I weighed 378 and now I'm down to 340. My first goal is 100 pounds then I'll make a new goal from there.

Congrats on both yours and your husband's weight loss!! I, too, would like to hear how much everybody else lost on the low carb diet! I will be starting the beginning of next week.

Did low carb for a bit..My nurse midwife suggested less than 35 a day.. I found I could not stick to it.I was getting only 900 calories a day. An not losing much weight....

I would love to make some kind of support group.. I am at 378* also.. ugh it a long way down.

So I am going with limited carb's not by number per se .
eat like a king for breakfast, like a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner.

I feel some much better when low carbing. But not to the extreme as before. An try to eat enough. I get into this weird stravation thing and then lose very little an walk away defeated.
