Default low carber just starting metformin...can you help???

Hi I have never been tested for PCOS, well, the few tests i did do all came back "normal" but with the huge belly fat, the horrible chin beard i have and the fact that from the age of 22 to 38 i had maybe 12 periods (somehow did have one child during that time..) and have cystic ovaries...

anyway, i lost 100lbs on low carb (and suddenly started having periods which have been regular since)..yay me, but gained about 40 back. I can lose 15lbs in a month eating no to low carbs but can gain 20 back eating like "everyone else" soooo frustrating. I havent been able to eat a piece of bread in 6 yrs without guilt. I actually lost 40lbs last year in 4 months eating almost no carbs and low calorie, only to go to disney with the family for 3 weeks and GAINED 20LBS! all in my gut i swear.

anyway my DR gave me met xr, i started with 500 today and will work up to 1500mg in 3 weeks.

Question is...can i lose wt (i need to lose atleast 30lbs) just eating normally, not indulging but just eating "normally". I dont mean taco bell everyday, but maybe once in a while or omg a potato? Without atleast gaining.

Right now i cant even eat fruit without gaining!

Also, i'm a nurse and work long shifts so im frightened of the SE. I took my pill with dinner tonight and only S/E i feel is gas. But its kinda bad gas lol. If i didnt have Nausea today do you think i'm safe? I'd hate to be at work and nausea's

Sorry for the Questions, just new and a bit freaked by this all!

You can lose weight by eating "normally". The problem comes when you cut out or right down on food groups and then eat them again, I think that your body doesn't know what to do with them and so you end up putting on a lot of weight in a short space of time.

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to lose it slowly, 1-2 pounds a week. The GI diet is good in combination with metformin (as my consultant keeps telling me). Personally I'm doing a GI like diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and I'm steadily losing weight but I haven't cut any foods out, I still eat chocolate, chips, crisps but in moderation.

The side effects of metformin, at least for me, depend quite a lot on what I've eaten, much worse with greasy, fatty foods. Also, I've got to say that for me, nausea wasn't really a problem, it was more the other end if you know what I mean!!

Anyway, good luck with everything!

I'd give up chocolate, but I'm no quitter.

I am not disorganized, I have anti-systematic methodology disorder.

You might want to check out The Insulin Restistance Diet book or the IR diet thread under weight loss. I love the Insulin Resistance Book. You can have carbs but no more than 30 gr every 2 hrs with protein. You can have pasta but one cup and not bread too. The author even says to plan for a splurge like have chicken breast and salad/veggies and then have a small dessert if at a party dinner out whatever. I do find that I lose weight slowly (about a lb a week) but I don't feel deprived. I do recommend that it's best to not eat chocolate for your carbs frequently but you can. Whole grain pasta, brown rice, fruit seem to really be the best but we all know that. I've lost 15lbs since Jan with the IR diet and Met
