Hey Fayth,

My doctor told me that I should not do Atkins. She said it is too extreme. She does recommend that I eat low carb but the only guidelines she really gave me was to eat chicken, fish , and veggies and skip the breads, rice, and potatoes.

I don't know what to tell you about your meds other than to say be careful. This is really something you should talk to your doctor about.

I have tried Atkins several times. The first time was before I was actually diagnosed with Diabetes. The diet made me very sick. So sick that I could not lift my head off the pillow. I stuck with it for the two week induction period. I lost 23 pounds in the first week and nothing in the second. I was so sick my dh made me quit. I tried it again a few months ago (this time I knew about my diabetes and am on 2000mg Glucophage) The diet still made me very sick and I could only manage a few days of it and had to quit.

Ok, so I guess I have given you TMI but I just wanted to say be careful adjusting your meds on your own!

I have to disagree with Skooters docs advice. I am also diabetic and have had a very positive experience on Atkins. I went on the diet at the advice of my Doc, my endo and my DE. I also belong to a local group of diabetics who follow this way of eating, and all report great success.

There are certain people who are adversely affected by Atkins, but that is a minority.

As far as adjusting ur meds, it is quite important that u stay in contact with ur doc so that he can do the adjusting, not u. As diabetics on this diet we are a bit more sensative to the highs and lows of carb or no carb, and must be responsable for maintaining good readings. Part of that responsability requires a doctors close monitoring.

You don't mention what meds u are on, or what type of diabetic u are, this also plays a part in ur success on this way of eating.

Never adjust your meds on your own, always consult your physcian!

Default Low carbing works for Diabetes!

I'm Type 2 and have PCOS. My primary care physician and endo also agree that low-carbing is beneficial, even Atkins - the plan I'm on. I've lost 55 lbs. in 9 months, and I was able to discontinue my 2000 mg of Glucophage by Day 6 of Induction. I've found that the doctors who frown at Atkins don't really understand what it's all about - I eat more veggies now than ever before, it's not all meat and cheese!
