Well I was on BCP's (varied over the years) and had a few mini strokes and a real Stroke after 10 years.
The BCP's were my only risk factor except the PCOS!
Take the time to talk to your doctor and make a decision you can live with don't just accept the old line this is what you take to allieviate symptoms. There are risks, be an informed consumer!
Good Luck
Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope you are doing well now...

I was 33 and on Desogen when I had a stroke. I was in the hospital for over a week, while they ran test after test. They even ran dye in my brain to test for aneurysms. Could find nothing. Blame was totally given to BCP's. Thankfully, I have recovered and have no visible symptoms from the stroke.
How did you find out that you had mini strokes? I have been having some head pains and numbness on the left side of my face, but doctors have been saying that it sounds like an allergic reaction to some foods. I need to make an appointment to see an Allergy Specialist, but haven't done so. Can you let me know how you found out you were having mini strokes?

I personally did not realize until after I had my real stroke that I had mini strokes (TIA). I had extreme dizzyness and my eye sight dimmed like as if I came in from outside on a really bright day - everything seemed very dark and when I blinked I had the sensation of bright lights. If that made sense - but I was inside the whole time. It lasted 4 minutes or less each time and went away after. I thought it was something wrond with my eyes so I want to the eye doctor and he suggested either I was having migraines or hypertension and to check with my MD re hypertension. I personally did not check with my PCP because it was over and I knew I did not have blood pressure issues... Over 2 years it occured 5 times and then I had a real stroke.
Do not blow it off get your self checked out - I take an asprin every day and that is all I need to prevent it (and no birth control pills)
I think that a lot of women who learn about "low dose" birth control pills would naturally think that these sort of pills would be better for them, but what people sometimes forget is that usually when doctors say "low dose" they mean a low dosage of estrogen when in reality many of the potential side effects are may actually related to the progestin hormone in these pills. Someone mentioned Yaz/Yasmin earlier -- these drugs contain the progestion hormone "drsp" and medical studies have shown that birth controls pills that contain drsp have a substantially higher risk of causing thrombosis (blood clots) than many other birth control pills. Basically, just be careful about assuming that low-dose birth control pills are always safer.
There's a blog that has more information about the side effects of Yaz and Yasmin and also the lawsuits that have been filed -- look for Yaz on Trial
