Smile Low GI grab-n-go?

I've heard to be successful in losing weight with PCOS you should go on a low gi diet. I've bought a SB Diet cookbook and a low gi info book with recipes but I would really like to discover a pre-packaged snack (preferably a breakfast sort) that I don't have to warm up so that I can put it in my purse the night before and eat it on my way to school/work in the mornings. A lot of the recipes I have only take 5 or so minutes, but I'm not always hungry when I first wake up to eat the meal and so when hunger hits me on my way to school or work, I'd like to have a low gi grab-n-go snack ready for me!

Has anyone found a good low gi snack?

I've never heard of a low GI prepackaged snack but I just started on the diet. I found a breakfast cookie recipe though that would work for grab and go if you made them ahead of time. Seems really simple too, when I go back to the grocery store I'm going to get the ingredients for them. Hope this helps out! (sorry about the formatting--it keeps saying I've reached my image limit, but I can't figure out where I've added them)
Low GI Breakfast Cookies
1 c. Special K cereal, 1/3 cup rolled oats (oatmeal), 2 tbsp All Bran cereal, 2 tbsp fructose (or artificial sweetener equivalent of 2 tbsp sugar), 2 tbsp milk powder, 2 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 egg lightly beaten
In medium bowl, combine first 5 ingredients. Blend together remaining ingredients then pour over the dry ingredients. Stir until well blended. Drop mixture by spoonfuls onto a dinner plate covered in wax paper. There should be 8 to 10 "blobs". Use wet fingers to push mixture from spoon and shape. Microwave on High Power (100%) for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Allow to cool. Yields 8 to 10 cookies.

You could try high protein shakes - we buy these at Costco - there are a couple different brands, Muscle Milk being one of them. They aren't too bad.

I have found a delicious pre-packaged snack. It's Dempster's Healthy Way ProCardio bars. They're like granola bars packed full of fiber (7g to be exact!). I usually buy them at Walmart Superstore, near the bread section. They come in two flavours and are delicious! It's nice to find a snack that you don't have to prepare.

The foods you listed are not low glycemic, Speciak K is really high in carbs, and fructose should not be consumed by those who have blood sugar disorders.

You can read this book from Michel Montignac called, "Eat Yourself Slim."
I do see a nutritionist as well, but most of what I've learned is from this book alone. I've lost 45 pounds so far.

Paola, I apologize. I found the recipe on a website that claimed it had low gi recipes. I have since picked up a copy of The New Glucose Revolution 3rd ed and read up. According to that book, Special K has a GI value of 56, so you're absolutely right. Its not a low GI food. Thanks for the book suggestion, I'll have to look for it at the library. I'm eager to know more. Congrats on your weight loss!

With reference to the Special K comment, I think the recipe author would have meant the meal as a whole was low GI. You can lower the GI of a meal that is otherwise high by mixing in low GI ingredients such as the rolled oats and all bran.

Hello Fr,

Your recommended books not help those people who have not eating diet food and not know food quality with calories.

So I request all people must they eat only diet food for best health.

Believe it or not, if you go into the pharmacy section of Wal-Mart and go to the protein bars, you can find a few low GI bars there. The ones I found were the Snickers Marathon bars and the Luna bars. Both claim to be low GI, so I'm hoping they're right, because the Snickers Marathon bars are actually not nasty to eat!

almonds, pistachios, fruit, baby carrots, individual yogurts, hummus, applesauce, etc. Some Balance Bars have semi-low GI value...
