THe OBGYN said maybe I tested to soon because sometimes during pregnancy those levels tend to decrease. I retested again last week, 3 months after pregnancy and my levels are still low and my protein S levels are even lower. Has anyone else had this problem? OBGYN also told me that he would not recomend me going back on birth control ever again and I will need to take a blood thinner for my next pregnancy. I reallly feel like it's always something new. I have to go to a Hemotologist(sp). If anyone has info please help.
Thank--- |

See the hematologist and try to get additional testing. I hope you have some answers soon!

Points: 3,648.07 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,648.07 | After my second loss the OB/GYN did lots of blood work and tests to see if they could find something. It came back that I had low protein C and 2 MTHFR gene mutations. He sent me to a hemotologist who in my opinion didn't know much about blood related to pregnancy. He retested and apparently my protein C was back to normal. But I do have the MTHFR mutation. From what I researched about Protein C levels being low when I thought mine were it seems as though you will be placed on blood thinnners like heparin shots when you get pregnant. You may want to take 81mg of aspirin when you start trying to conceive. My OB/GYN said some people do this who have had miscarriages. Some say it thins the blood, since it is a low dose it does not affect the baby, and actually could help you conceive. I am not sure this is true but I am taking it. Especially since the Hemo. .doesn't think I have a clotting issue. I do have to take double the folic acid for the MTHFR mutation but that is all. Good luck at the Hemotologist appointment.

Actually I don't know anything about the Protein C and S thing (but will google it!) but I took heparin with my first successful pregnancy and just had a little boy on January 10. Yay, heparin! Before I found out I was PG, I was taking baby aspirin, and I believe the only reason my pregnancy made it to the point of the BFP was due to the baby aspirin. I took it up to the 35 1/2 week mark, then just did heparin alone till 39 weeks, 1 day (I delivered at 39w2d).
Good luck...I'll let you know if I find anything on Google... |

I google it before and everything was in large terms and hard to understand medical terms that I really could not understand what it was other than it was a clotting disorder. I never had any problems with clotting I wonder if taking BC for so long caused this problem? I am so sick of something always being wrong. What were the side effects of Heparin? And Saluki_fan were you also taking glucopage with the baby asprin? I will get a refural and make an appointment this week to see the specialist.
Could this mean that I do not have IC but a blood clot caused my cervix to open? The doctor did say he saw blood but did not know where it came from at the same time as my cervix first started openeing but I never had any bleeding. |

| I was on heparin and baby aspirin for another clotting disorder, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. I am still on heparin till Wednesday - my OB wanted me to take it up till 2 weeks after delivery. I guess I'll start taking the baby aspirin again soon as well.
And yes, birth control pills (or any hormonal birth control, such as NuvaRing or the patch) can cause clotting, especially in smokers, those with high blood pressure or women over 35 years old, so it's generally not a good idea to take them if you have a clotting issue. DH and I will have to figure something else out for birth control, I guess, but honestly, the thought of birth control just makes us laugh after our long journey to become parents. Quote: |

| Yes I did, but for a different reason. I took glucophage / Metformin to ovulate, and the baby aspirin / heparin to control blood clotting.
Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, ask away! |

I understand it is a blood clotting disorder, and it can be cause by heriditary. I'm 24 not on birth control have not been on them in 3 years and never had a blood clotting issue before. It said online the chances of having both low C and S is like 1 and 3000 (Why me huh) but I am praying that it is a mistake of some sort and I don't have yet another thing to worry about. |
